Permanent Chair appointed to New Zealand Institute of Advanced Technology
Science, Innovation and Technology Minister Penny Simmonds has announced the appointment of Steve O'Connor as permanent Chair of the New Zealand Institute of Advanced Technology (NZIAT).
“Steve has served as Establishment Chair of NZIAT since January 2026 and has provided strong leadership and governance during the critical foundation phase,” Ms Simmonds says.
"NZIAT’s initial work includes investment in advanced materials and magnetic technologies, alongside work to formally assess opportunities in artificial intelligence and explore quantum technology opportunities.
“Steve has extensive experience across innovation, venture incubation, capital markets, and commercialisation. As Deputy Chair of New Zealand Growth Capital Partners and a successful founder and business leader, he has a strong record of supporting technology companies and fostering innovation.
“His leadership and expertise will be invaluable as NZIAT continues to build momentum and plays an increasingly important role in strengthening New Zealand’s advanced technology sector and translating research excellence into economic opportunity.”
Ms Simmonds also announced the appointment of Marko Bogoievski to the NZIAT Board.
“Marko is the co-founder and director of Runway - Intelligent Capital and Maker Partners, and a partner of MQB Partners. He brings deep expertise in advanced technology investment and commercialisation, capital markets, funding strategies, and the governance of complex multi-stakeholder organisations.
“His strong understanding of best practice across the public and private sectors combined with his knowledge of New Zealand and international venture systems and markets will be a valuable addition to the NZIAT Board.”
