Lesotho received 100,000 doses of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccines from Botswana strengthening the country’s efforts to prevent and control the disease.
The vaccine support follows commitments made during the Inaugural Lesotho–Botswana Bi-National Commission (BNC), where the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation in animal health, veterinary services, disease surveillance, and food security. As part of the ongoing collaboration, a team of veterinary experts from Botswana is expected in Lesotho to train local experts ahead of the vaccination campaign, after which vaccination of livestock will commence.
Government is also working to secure additional vaccine doses to expand the vaccination programme and strengthen efforts towards restoring FMD-free status for Lesotho. The development is a practical demonstration of the growing Lesotho–Botswana partnership and the commitment made through the BNC to translate bilateral agreements into tangible interventions that protect livelihoods, strengthen food security, and support the livestock sector.
The Government of Lesotho expressed its sincere gratitude to the Government and people of the Republic of Botswana for this timely support, which will contribute significantly to the country’s efforts to contain FMD and protect the livelihoods of Basotho farmers.
