Gobierno acelera los preparativos del año escolar y fortalece el acceso a formación tecnológica
Santo Domingo.- A few days before the start of the 2026-2027 school year, actions continue aimed at expanding opportunities for young people, strengthening the educational system, supporting sports talent and facilitating access to higher education. During the presentation of the Weekly Summary, this was highlighted by the director of the Directorate of Government Strategy and Communication (Diecom), Félix Reyna, who reviewed the main actions developed by the government of President Luis Abinader for the benefit of the population.
More than 36,000 technological scholarships to prepare youth
Promoting the training of young people, President Luis Abinader led at the National Palace the delivery of more than 36,000 technological scholarships through the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA), aimed at training young people in high-demand areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, information networks, software development, digital marketing, graphic design and languages.
Reyna reported that the initiative expands access to STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, in Spanish) and the emerging areas of Industry 4.0, strengthening the preparation of Dominican talent for the jobs of the present and the future.
Teacher training and distribution of school kits
The director of Diecom also highlighted that the Ministry of Education began a national training day for 90,000 teachers of all levels, modalities and educational subsystems, as part of the preparations for the start of the 2026-2027 school year scheduled for August 24, and with the aim of strengthening knowledge, practices and pedagogical tools to generate better learning opportunities for students throughout the national territory.
As part of these preparations, the National Student Welfare Institute (INABIE) continues to expand the distribution of corresponding school supplies, with 815,664 kits delivered so far.
The program will benefit more than 1.8 million students from 6,577 educational centers, with a direct impact on more than 1.4 million families, contributing to reducing school expenses and guaranteeing that students have the necessary supplies to start the school year.
Santo Domingo 2026 medalists will be incorporated into Parni
Reyna also highlighted that, starting in 2027, all Dominican athletes who won medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026 will be incorporated into the High Performance, New Values and Immortal Athletes Program (Parni), whose funds will also be doubled to increase incentives for athletes.
This week, President Luis Abinader recognized the performance of the national delegation, which won 150 medals, the best performance in Dominican history in these games, both in terms of the number of gold medals and the total number of medals obtained.
New buses strengthen university mobility
During the Weekly Summary, the delivery of 40 new buses for the transportation of university students from different associations in the country was also reported, raising to 90 the units incorporated during the current administration, to strengthen student mobility and reduce economic and geographic barriers to access higher education.
As part of this push, the University Transportation Route of New Opportunities (Shift) program was announced, aimed at organizing and geolocating student associations, establishing routes and optimizing the use of buses according to the needs of the communities.
OMSA incorporates an integrated rate in the February 27 Corridor
Urban mobility also took an important step this week, after the Metropolitan Bus Services Operator (OMSA) began commercial operation of the February 27 Corridor with an integrated fare of RD 35.00, incorporating this service into the fare and operational integration system of mass transportation in Greater Santo Domingo.
The measure will facilitate more agile, simple and economical mobility for thousands of users, by strengthening the connection between OMSA buses and the Integrated Transportation System through a unified electronic payment scheme.
With these initiatives, the country continues to expand opportunities for thousands of Dominicans, strengthening the educational system, supporting the development of sports and improving mobility conditions in different communities.
