One dead, four trapped after landslide in southern China
Beijing, Aug. 17 (SANA)One person was confirmed dead and four others remained trapped after alandslidestruck a construction site in Nandan County, China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Monday, local authorities said.Xinhua reported that the incident occurred at around 11:26 a.m. in Mangchang Township, Nandan County, according to the county’s emergency management bureau. Local authorities immediately dispatched a joint rescue team to the site, with search and rescue operations underway.Reuters reported, citing a local government statement, that the landslide occurred at a construction site in Nandan County shortly before noon.Reuters also reported that President Xi Jinping called for improving China’s ability to prevent, mitigate and respond to natural disasters in an article published Saturday, following a series of deadly floods and landslides this summer.Localities across China have been dealing with the impact ofTyphoon Dolphin, whose remnants brought extreme rainfall to eastern, central and northern China last week, according to Reuters.SouthwesternChina’s Sichuan Provinceissued an alert for heavy rain from Monday to Tuesday and warned of geological disaster risks, while Shaanxi Province in northwestern China warned of heightened risks of disasters, including floods and landslides, Reuters said.
