A terminal for official delegations has been built at Urgench International Airport, and the initial phase of reconstructing the new airfield complex is progressing rapidly.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to Khorezm region started with an overview of these projects.

The airport was commissioned in 1960 and granted international status in 1992. Covering more than 285 hectares, the complex has served thousands of passengers over the years. Currently, about ten major airlines operate scheduled flights through the airport. This year alone, the airport generated services worth 126 billion UZS, up 31 percent from the same period in 2025.

The dynamics of the modern world, along with the growing number of tourists and the expanding scope of international cooperation, have highlighted the need to significantly boost existing capacity.

A $264 million investment has been designated to expand and modernize Urgench International Airport. The project is carried out through a public-private partnership.

Incheon International Airport Corporation of South Korea, known for running one of the world’s most advanced and highly regarded aviation hubs, has been chosen as the project’s private partner.

The President noted that Khiva and Urgench are becoming global hubs for major international summits, high-level diplomatic meetings, and prestigious economic and cultural forums. It was emphasized that ensuring a high level of comfort and security for foreign delegations attending such events directly strengthens the country’s international standing.

During reconstruction, the airport is being upgraded to handle wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 747 and Airbus A350, enabling direct, non-stop long-haul flights to Khorezm from multiple continents.

At the first stage, construction of an aircraft parking area for 18 planes and a new taxiway will be completed. In addition, the airport is developing modern border and visa control facilities, a comfortable business lounge, retail outlets and catering facilities, a 24-hour medical center, and a duty-free zone offering products from global brands.

Once the project is complete, the airport’s capacity will increase from 300 to 1,300 passengers per hour.
