Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine with special responsibility for Fisheries, Timmy Dooley TD, has announced the appointment of Marie Gleeson and Dervla Tierney to the Board of the Marine Institute.

The appointments bring two highly accomplished professionals to the Board. Marie Gleeson, a former Senior Officer in the Irish Naval Service and founder of leadership consultancy NavMar Leadership, has over 20 years’ experience in maritime operations, leadership and organisational development. Dervla Tierney is a Chartered Accountant and experienced non-executive director with extensive expertise in finance, corporate governance, audit and risk management. Together, they bring a wealth of experience that will support the board in guiding the Marine Institute’s strategic direction and delivery of its national mandate.

Welcoming the appointments, Minister of State Dooley said:

“I am delighted to announce the appointments of Marie Gleeson and Dervla Tierney to the Board of the Marine Institute. Both bring significant expertise and leadership experience that will be a valuable asset to the Institute as it continues to support the Government in addressing the opportunities and challenges facing Ireland’s marine sector. The Marine Institute plays a critical role in providing the scientific knowledge and evidence that underpin sustainable ocean management, climate action and the development of our blue economy. I am confident that Marie and Dervla will make an important contribution to the Board’s work in supporting the Institute’s mission and strategic ambitions over the coming years.”

The Minister noted that both board members have been appointed for a period of five years following an open State Boards recruitment process.

“On behalf of the board, I am delighted to welcome Marie Gleeson and Dervla Tierney as new members of the Marine Institute Board. Marie brings exceptional maritime leadership experience, together with deep expertise in organisational development and strategic leadership. Dervla’s extensive experience in finance, governance, audit and risk management across a range of public and private sector organisations will be invaluable in supporting the Board’s oversight role.

Their complementary skills and perspectives will further strengthen the Board as we work with the Executive to advance the Marine Institute’s mission of delivering world-class marine research, innovation and scientific services for the benefit of Ireland’s society, economy and environment. I look forward to working closely with both Marie and Dervla in the years ahead.”

Marie Gleeson is the Founder and Managing Director of NavMar Leadership, providing bespoke leadership consultancy, executive coaching and keynote speaker services. She is also an Associate Consultant with Ingenium Training and Consulting.

A former Senior Officer in the Irish Naval Service, Marie served for 20 years, including as Commanding Officer of the LÉ Aoife, and completed United Nations service in Chad. She has extensive experience in leadership, human resource management and organisational development, working with multidisciplinary teams at all levels.

Her career has provided expertise in maritime operations, crisis and risk management, strategic decision-making and the alignment of public policy with organisational strategy.

Marie currently serves on the Board of Youth Work Ireland Tipperary and previously completed two terms on the Research Ethics Committee of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. Marie was also appointed to the Board of Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) in 2020 and will serve on the board until November of this year. She is a member of the Institute of Directors and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council, and a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Dervla Tierney is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the Institute of Directors with extensive expertise in finance, corporate governance and risk management.

She currently serves as Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Housing Agency. She also serves as Independent Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee of the Middletown Centre for Autism, a North/South initiative delivering educational services on an all-island basis for children with autism, and of Wexford Local Development, a community-based organisation supporting social and economic development.

In addition, Dervla represents the public interest as a member of the Health Committee of the Pharmacy Regulator and serves on the Credit Committee of Enniscorthy Credit Union.

Earlier in her career, Dervla held senior positions with CRH plc and KPMG, gaining extensive commercial, financial and governance experience.
