President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that National Day reminds us that a nation united in patriotism is a nation bound for fortune.

The President made these remarks in his address to the nation at the official National Day ceremony held in HA. Utheemu today.

Reflecting on the events that led to the Maldives falling under Portuguese rule, the President recalled how, following the betrayal of Islam and the Maldivian nation by Sultan Hassan IX, two rival leaders of the time, Sultan Abu Bakuru II and Sultan Ali VI, set aside the political differences that had long divided them and reconciled in the interest of the nation.

The President noted that, in rejecting Sultan Hassan IX's stance against the nation and its faith, the political leaders of the day and the Maldivian people alike prioritised the national interest and the Islamic faith. National Day, he observed, bears testament to the fact that, though a small number may stray, Maldivians and their ancestors have always remained true to the nation and its values.

The President stated that National Day inspires us to revive the noble virtues and values that once distinguished the Maldivian people; to bring harmony to our hearts through a national vision and spirit; to remain united with one spirit and one purpose; to rise above division; and to preserve the Maldives as a happy and peaceful home for all Maldivians.

He further stated that Maldivians must never lose their identity amongst foreign powers, and must instead remain firmly rooted in their faith, national sovereignty, and independence.
