Muhammad Thakurufaanu’s legacy offers blueprint for Maldivian governance: President15 August 2026

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the core philosophy of Maldivian governance is embodied in the life and example of Utheemu Mahaaradhun, Sultan Al-Ghaazee Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam.

The President made these remarks in his address to the nation at the official National Day ceremony held in HA. Utheemu today.

Highlighting the enduring lessons from Muhammad Thakurufaanu’s life, the President reflected on his leadership — both as a wartime strategist in the struggle for liberation and as a ruler who subsequently steered domestic and foreign affairs with wisdom during a delicate period in the nation’s history.

The President noted that Muhammad Thakurufaanu set a lasting example through his exceptional mastery of the sea, having acquired the vital maritime knowledge and skills of the era. He also highlighted how the national hero united scattered island communities with a shared purpose and singular resolve as they prepared to resist Portuguese colonial rule.

Furthermore, President Dr Muizzu stated that through his astute foreign policy, Muhammad Thakurufaanu proved that Maldivians will always place national sovereignty and independence above all else. He added that vital lessons remain to be drawn from the tactical strategies he employed in warfare, as well as his unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Islamic faith.
