Representatives of various educational unions, including the Federation of Teachers' Organizations in Suriname (FOLS), the Union of Teachers in Technical Education (BLTO) and BvL/ALS, have brought the bottlenecks within vocational education to the attention of President Jennifer Simons. During a meeting with the Head of State on Friday, August 14, 2026 at the Office of the President, a call was made for the reintroduction of old learning systems. The unions consider rapid action necessary to strengthen vocational education, retain subject teachers and offer students better opportunities for further education and a sustainable place in the labor market.
BLTO President Jennifer Ballo shares that the common thread of the conversation is the need to reintroduce the B course at the LBO level. This direction was discontinued in October 2025. According to the education unions, this decision has limited the advancement opportunities for students with a strong practical aptitude. Ballo emphasizes that the craft group in particular is affected by the disappearance of the LBO B direction. "The B level is our craft group. Students can get started with an LBO B diploma, but they also have the option to continue their studies through evening school."
The unions point out that within the former LBO system there were various learning paths through which students could develop and possibly move on to a higher level. Ballo argues that the distinction between the A, B and C directions should not be seen as a ranking of intelligence. “A C level is more cognitive and AVO-oriented, while the B level is aimed at the craft group. It involves different learning needs and talents.”
The A level has now been replaced by the P or practical education consisting of a fast course. Practical education quickly provides young people with practical skills, but the risk is that they leave school too early to earn immediately and therefore have fewer opportunities for further development and growth later on. According to Ballo, it is important that students do not disappear from formal education too early. She emphasizes: "We want to keep children in school as long as possible. Suriname not only needs accomplices, but especially subject experts."
According to Ballo, it was agreed during the conversation that consultations would take place with the Minister of Education in the short term. "The president wants to arrange a meeting with the minister as soon as possible. We very much appreciate that. We expect a solution to be found." The BLTO chairman indicates that the unions are prepared to both reintroduce the B direction and reconsider the former four-year LBO system. "We are ready for the B level, but also to go back to the old LBO system. We believe it can work well again."

Tijdens een onderhoud met het staatshoofd op vrijdag 14 augustus 2026 op het Kabinet van de President, is gepleit voor het herintroduceren van oude leersystemen. De bonden achten snel handelen noodzakelijk om het beroepsonderwijs te versterken, vakdocenten te behouden en leerlingen betere kansen te bieden op verdere scholing en een duurzame plek op de arbeidsmarkt. BLTO-voorzitter Jennifer Ballo deelt mee dat de rode draad van het gesprek de noodzaak is om de B-richting op LBO-niveau opnieuw in te voeren. Deze richting werd in oktober 2025 stopgezet. Volgens de onderwijsbonden heeft dit besluit de doorstroommogelijkheden van leerlingen met een sterke praktische aanleg beperkt. Ballo benadrukt dat vooral de ambachtsgroep door het verdwijnen van de LBO B-richting wordt geraakt. “Het B-niveau is onze ambachtsgroep. Met een LBO B-diploma kunnen leerlingen aan de slag, maar ze hebben ook de mogelijkheid om verder te studeren via de avondschool.” De bonden wijzen erop dat binnen het voormalige LBO-systeem verschillende leerwegen bestonden, waarbij leerlingen zich konden ontwikkelen en eventueel konden doorstromen naar een hoger niveau. Ballo stelt dat het onderscheid tussen de A-, B- en C-richting niet moet worden gezien als een rangorde van intelligentie. “Een C-niveau is meer cognitief en AVO-gericht, terwijl B-niveau gericht is op de ambachtsgroep. Het gaat om verschillende leerbehoeften en talenten.” Thans is het A-niveau vervangen door het P of praktisch onderwijs bestaande uit een snelle cursus. Het praktijkonderwijs biedt jongeren snel praktische vaardigheden, maar het risico is dat ze te vroeg de school verlaten om gelijk te verdienen en daardoor later minder mogelijkheden hebben om zich verder te ontwikkelen en door te groeien. Het is volgens Ballo belangrijk dat leerlingen niet te vroeg uit het formele onderwijs verdwijnen. Zij benadrukt: “Wij willen kinderen zo lang mogelijk op school houden. Suriname heeft niet alleen handlangers nodig, maar vooral vakdeskundigen.” Tijdens het gesprek is volgens Ballo afgesproken dat op korte termijn overleg zal plaatsvinden met de minister van Onderwijs. “De president wil zo snel mogelijk een gesprek met de minister arrangeren. Dat stellen wij zeer op prijs. Wij verwachten dat er een oplossing komt.” De BLTO-voorzitter geeft aan dat de bonden bereid zijn om zowel de B-richting opnieuw in te voeren als het voormalige vierjarige LBO-systeem opnieuw te bekijken. “Wij zijn ready voor het B-niveau, maar ook om terug te gaan naar het oude LBO-systeem.
