Representatives and health authorities from Suriname, Brazil, French Guiana and Guyana gathered on August 13 and 14, 2026 for a crucial sub-regional meeting on the elimination of malaria in the Guiana Shield. The conference, organized under the banner of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), was officially opened in the presence of the Surinamese President, H.E. Drs. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons.
In their speeches, dignitaries and international health leaders emphasized the crucial importance of a joint, cross-border approach.
During the opening ceremony, dignitaries and international health leaders emphasized the importance of a joint, cross-border approach. Those present included:
In addition to these delegation leaders, representatives from the four participating Guiana Shield countries, diplomatic missions, indigenous community leaders and international partners are also participating in the discussions. The Guiana Shield is one of the most complex areas for malaria control in the Americas.
Dr. Yafflo Ouattara, PAHO/WHO Representative in Suriname, opened the series of speeches and highlighted the specific epidemiological challenges of the area, such as the high mobility of gold miners and the difficult-to-reach border areas:
"Suriname has shown that elimination is possible, even under complex circumstances. But maintaining that malaria-free status depends on constant vigilance and strong cooperation with our neighboring countries. No country can eliminate and maintain malaria in isolation; our shared epidemiological reality requires a shared approach. This meeting must therefore lead to concrete, measurable agreements."
Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas, PAHO/WHOassistant director, expressed her great appreciation for the Surinamese hosting and emphasized the historic impact of the Surinamese achievement on the entire region.
“Suriname has become the first country in the Amazon to interrupt and sustain endemic malaria transmission, proving that malaria elimination is achievable, even in environments with dense forests, dispersed communities, challenging terrain and complex migration patterns.”
She underlined that the Surinamese experience shows that success does not only depend on medical interventions, but above all on strong community involvement, political will and well-thought-out strategies. According to her, eradicating malaria is not just a medical necessity, but a fundamental investment in human well-being, social equality and sustainable economic growth. PAHO recalls that all countries involved have a shared responsibility to protect these achievements and apply the lessons learned to make the entire Guiana Shield permanently malaria-free. The organization remains at the countries' side as a loyal partner to protect and further expand these results.
The Minister of Health, Welfare and Labour, André Misiekaba, underlined the urgent need for this cross-border responsibility.
“The Guiana Shield shares the same forest, the same river system and the same deadly mosquito. That means we either win together, or the parasite wins. Our efforts are focused on protecting human life.”
Misiekaba took the opportunity to express his sincere gratitude to the National Committee for the Maintenance of Malaria-Free Status — led by Dr. Freden and Dr. Eersel, among others. He proudly explained that Suriname has now successfully completed one full year of post-certification without any reintroduction of the disease.
Finally, PresidentH.E. Drs. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons reflected on the long-term process that Suriname has gone through and emphasized that vision and perseverance are decisive.
“The result that Suriname has achieved has been an effort of more than twenty years. It is not that Suriname had a lot of money, we even had periods of major financial crisis. The fact that we have succeeded shows that a strategic and integrated approach is the key to success,” said the president.
She called on the countries present to make the entire Guiana Shield the very first malaria-free region of the Amazon region and indicated that Suriname is ready to function as a regional expertise and knowledge center (Center of Excellence). The meeting is part of the Malaria Elimination Action Plan 2026–2030 and is supported by PAHO in collaboration with partners such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Fund, Malaria No More, MMV, PATH and the French government. With this meeting, Suriname, Brazil, French Guiana and Guyana are taking a historic step towards a completely malaria-free Guiana Shield.

Drs. Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. © 2026 GOV.SR |Privacy Policy|Cookie Policy
