PAHO-topfunctionaris bespreekt samenwerking en malaria-eliminatie met president Simons
Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Deputy Director Dr. Rhonda Sealy-Thomas paid a courtesy call on President Jennifer Simons. The visit that took place on Friday, August 14, 2026 at the Office of the President focused, among other things, on the cooperation between PAHO and Suriname and the efforts to eliminate malaria in the Guiana Shield. The top PAHO official is currently in Suriname for a sub-regional meeting on the elimination of malaria in the Guiana Shield.
The “Subregional meeting on malaria elimination in the Guiana Shield” started on Thursday and brings together four countries: French Guiana, Guyana, Brazil and Suriname. “We look at challenges, gaps and interventions to eliminate malaria in the Guiana Shield,” said Sealy-Thomas. Suriname was certified last year as a country that has eliminated malaria. “We want to ensure that Suriname maintains that elimination, but that the other countries in the Guiana Shield also achieve that elimination of malaria.”
Regarding the fight against malaria, the Deputy Director of PAHO emphasized the importance of further cooperation between the Guiana Shield countries. She points out various challenges that the countries face. “I hope they will continue to work together to address the challenges they all face,” said Sealy-Thomas. She mentions mining, people living in remote areas and access to care as examples.
According to her, diagnostics and testing and adequate treatment of malaria also remain important points of attention. “Those are some of the challenges they all face and we hope that at the end of this summit they will find common solutions to those problems and challenges.”
PAHO collaborates with Suriname in various areas. Sealy-Thomas indicates that the organization is working with the government of the Republic of Suriname on a country cooperation strategy, in which the areas for cooperation are laid down. This includes universal access to healthcare, primary health care, non-communicable diseases, mental health and infectious diseases.
According to Sealy-Thomas, President Simons also specifically discussed improving healthcare for the people of Suriname. “The main focus has been on improving the health care of the people of Suriname, ensuring that they have access to care and receive the right treatment.” According to the PAHO deputy director, the ultimate goal is that people have access to the care they need and are able to lead healthy and productive lives.

Het bezoek dat plaatsvond op vrijdag 14 augustus 2026 op het Kabinet van de President stond onder meer in het teken van de samenwerking tussen PAHO en Suriname en de inspanningen om malaria in het Guyanaschild te elimineren. De PAHO-topfunctionaris is momenteel in Suriname voor een subregionale bijeenkomst over de eliminatie van malaria in het Guyanaschild. De “Subregional meeting on malaria elimination in the Guiana Shield” is donderdag van start gegaan en brengt vier landen bijeen: Frans-Guyana, Guyana, Brazilië en Suriname. “Daarbij kijken we naar uitdagingen, hiaten en interventies om malaria in het Guyanaschild te elimineren”, aldus Sealy-Thomas. Suriname werd vorig jaar gecertificeerd als land dat malaria heeft geëlimineerd. “We willen ervoor zorgen dat Suriname die eliminatie behoudt, maar dat ook de andere landen in het Guyanaschild die eliminatie van malaria bereiken.” Wat betreft de strijd tegen malaria benadrukte de adjunct-directeur van PAHO het belang van verdere samenwerking tussen de landen in het Guyanaschild. Zij wijst daarbij op verschillende uitdagingen waarmee de landen worden geconfronteerd. “Ik hoop dat zij zullen blijven samenwerken om de uitdagingen waarmee zij allemaal worden geconfronteerd aan te pakken”, zegt Sealy-Thomas. Als voorbeelden noemt zij de mijnbouw, mensen die in afgelegen gebieden wonen en de toegang tot zorg. Ook diagnostiek en testen en een adequate behandeling van malaria blijven volgens haar belangrijke aandachtspunten. “Dat zijn enkele van de uitdagingen waarmee zij allemaal worden geconfronteerd en we hopen dat zij aan het einde van deze topbijeenkomst tot gemeenschappelijke oplossingen komen voor die problemen en uitdagingen.” PAHO werkt op verschillende gebieden samen met Suriname. Sealy-Thomas geeft aan dat de organisatie samen met de regering van de Republiek Suriname werkt aan een country cooperation strategy, waarin de gebieden voor samenwerking zijn vastgelegd. Daarbij gaat het onder meer om universele toegang tot gezondheidszorg, eerstelijnsgezondheidszorg, niet-overdraagbare aandoeningen, geestelijke gezondheid en infectieziekten. Met president Simons is volgens Sealy-Thomas ook specifiek gesproken over het verbeteren van de gezondheidszorg voor de bevolking van Suriname. “Er is vooral gekeken naar het verbeteren van de gezondheidszorg van de bevolking van Suriname, ervoor zorgen dat zij toegang hebben tot zorg en de juiste behandeling krijgen.” Het uiteindelijke doel is volgens de PAHO-adjunct-directeur dat mensen toegang hebben tot de zorg die zij nodig hebben en in staat zijn een gezond en productief leven te leiden.
