Examenbureau stelt belanghebbenden gerust over examenresultaten
The Examinations Office is reassuring stakeholders about the year 10 exam results. At some schools, the results were not announced on Friday, August 14, due to problems with some of the results. This has caused some unrest among educators, parents and students. However, Yvonne Pelswijk, head of the Examinations Office, says there is no need to worry. In conversation with the Communications Service Suriname (CDS) on Friday, August 14, the official indicated that these were a few edge cases in which the system had not calculated the correct result.
Pelswijk indicates that the exam in year 10 is fairly new and that there are still some teething problems. According to her, only the five exam subjects were sent to the schools last year. The schools then had to determine the student's result on the basis of this. "There were still some bottlenecks. So we decided to say that we would send the result entirely from the Examinations Office, so that the schools no longer had to calculate separately to arrive at the student's result."
According to Pelswijk, the Examination Office works with a very old system that cannot fully handle everything. After the result was printed, it turned out that everything was correct for students who passed all directions. The results were also correct for students who were completely rejected. The problems do not occur for everyone. “There are some edge cases where a student must have obtained multiple profiles. But the system indicates that the student has not obtained all the profiles,” says Pelswijk.
It has therefore been agreed that for the time being the schools will not receive the official, printed result, but an Excel file in which the results are indicated. For students whose results are incomplete, the schools must consult with the Examinations Office. The result is then confirmed. Pelswijk emphasizes that it is undoubtedly the task of the teacher or the examination board per school, including the supervisor sent from the ministry, to verify the result before ratifying it.
The announcement of the results may therefore have been postponed at some schools. Pelswijk does not think this is necessarily a problem, depending on the size of the school. Small schools might have been able to report the results later in the day. According to her, the results cannot be postponed indefinitely, because registration will follow afterwards. “In fact, that would already be on Monday. But the ministry will of course look at how we handle that. So that will shift a bit.”
Pelswijk calls on parents and students to remain calm. “The standards are in black and white. So it cannot be the case that the student receives a result that is not correct.” She emphasizes that schools will view the results and that parents can also verify them. In addition, the discussion of the result does not necessarily have to take place today. She explains that the result is discussed with parents, because students who have achieved multiple profiles must make a choice about the direction they want to follow.

Pelswijk geeft aan dat het examen in leerjaar 10 vrij nieuw is en dat er nog wat kinderziektes zijn. Volgens haar werden vorig jaar alleen de vijf examenvakken naar de scholen gestuurd. De scholen moesten vervolgens aan de hand daarvan het resultaat van de leerling bepalen. “Er waren dan nog wat knelpunten. Dus zijn we ertoe over gegaan om te zeggen, dat we het resultaat volledig vanuit het Examenbureau sturen, waardoor de scholen dan niet meer apart hoeven uit te rekenen om te komen tot het resultaat van de leerling.” Het Examenbureau werkt volgens Pelswijk met een heel oud systeem, dat niet alles volledig aankan. Nadat het resultaat was uitgedraaid, bleek dat bij leerlingen die voor alle richtingen zijn geslaagd alles correct was. Ook bij leerlingen die volledig zijn afgewezen, klopte het resultaat. De problemen doen zich niet bij eenieder voor. “Er zijn enkele randgevallen, waarbij een leerling meerdere profielen behaald moet hebben. Maar het systeem geeft dus aan dat de leerling niet al de profielen heeft behaald”, aldus Pelswijk. Daarom is afgesproken dat de scholen voorlopig niet het officiële, uitgeprinte resultaat ontvangen, maar een Excel-bestand waarin de resultaten zijn aangegeven. Bij leerlingen van wie het resultaat niet volledig is, moeten de scholen overleg plegen met het Examenbureau. Daarna wordt het resultaat bekrachtigd. Pelswijk benadrukt dat het ongetwijfeld de taak is van de leerkracht of de examencommissie per school, inclusief de toezichthouder die vanuit het ministerie wordt gestuurd, om het resultaat te verifiëren alvorens het te bekrachtigen. De bekendmaking van de uitslag kan daardoor bij sommige scholen zijn verschoven. Pelswijk vindt dat afhankelijk van de omvang van de school niet per se een probleem. Kleine scholen zouden de uitslag eventueel later op de dag hebben kunnen doen. De uitslag kan volgens haar niet onbeperkt worden uitgesteld, omdat daarna de inschrijving volgt. “In feite zou dat maandag al zijn. Maar het ministerie bekijkt dan natuurlijk hoe we dat oppakken. Dus zal dat dan ook een beetje verschuiven.” Pelswijk roept ouders en leerlingen op rustig te blijven. “De normen staan zwart op wit. Dus het kan niet zo zijn dat de leerling een uitslag krijgt dat niet correct is.” Zij benadrukt dat scholen de resultaten zullen inzien en dat ouders deze ook kunnen verifiëren. Daarnaast hoeft de bespreking van het resultaat niet noodzakelijk vandaag plaats te vinden. Zij legt uit dat het resultaat besproken wordt met ouders, omdat leerlingen die meerdere profielen hebben behaald, een keuze moeten maken over de richting die zij verder willen volgen.
