I pointed out that, in a small market such as Sri Lanka, the regulation of goods and services cannot be expected to rely solely on market competition. The Government must therefore have a strong price-regulation mechanism, supported by further strengthening Lanka Sathosa and the cooperative movement and utilizing them as key market participants. The operations of the Sri Lanka Thriposha Limited were also reviewed, with particular attention given to further improving the quality of its products. The role of the Department of Commerce in securing access to foreign markets, which is essential for Sri Lanka to achieve its future economic targets, was also reviewed. Attention was likewise given to the role of the Consumer Affairs Authority in ensuring the provision of quality goods to the public.
