<Measures against high prices ④>
In response to the situation in the Middle East that began at the end of February this year, Japan began providing subsidies to keep gasoline prices to a national average of around 170 yen/liter as part of its "emergency drastic change mitigation measures" in March.
During the Diet deliberations, it was pointed out that we should call for people to save money, but cars are essential for daily life and work, especially in rural areas. If gasoline prices soar before the long holidays, the tourism industry will also be hit. The Takaichi Cabinet has prioritized efforts to increase the number of sources of crude oil without halting economic activity.
Similar subsidies have been provided for light oil, heavy oil, and kerosene, supporting public transportation, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and other industries.
Gasoline prices are the lowest in Japan among Japan, the United States, and Europe, as shown in the chart below.
We will continue to closely monitor the impact of the situation in the Middle East on price trends and the economy, and when necessary, we will utilize the ``Contingency Fund for Response to Middle East Situations'' (2.5 trillion yen) to take measures to ensure that the lives of the people and economic activities are not disrupted.
Notes
