Vila Euclides: o reencontro com a história
I am here at the Vilaclite stadium, a place that brings back extraordinary memories. Here in 1979, Brazilian workers, represented by the metalworkers of the ABC region, gave a greater demonstration of organization than the working class has ever had in recent times. I was president of the metalworkers' union in São Bernardo do Campo, and I used to tell my friends: "The day we manage to gather this many people in an assembly, we might possibly change the history of Brazil." And it seems to me that something extraordinary happened. That sea of people heralded a new era. We all know that throughout the world, workers have never managed to win anything without struggle, without perseverance, without a willingness to fight to the end. We managed to fill the Vila Euclitz stadium. I held an assembly here on a kitchen table where I had to shout and wait for people to pass on what I had said until it reached the stands so I could start speaking again. Here in this stadium, we began to definitively change the history of Brazil. Here in this stadium, I could feel the strength of workers when they are politically aware and motivated to achieve something they want to achieve. Everything that happened in My life from '75 onwards took place in that stadium.
