Presidente Abinader recibe a estudiantes dominicanos residentes en España galardonados con el Premio al Mérito Escolar 2026
SantoDomingo.-The students awarded the 11th School Merit Award were received yesterday Wednesday by the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, at the National Palace, as part of the official agenda of their cultural visit to the country. This recognition, promoted by the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the Kingdom of Spain, distinguishes young people of Dominican nationality or origin, between 12 and 18 years old, who have stood out for their academic excellence, spirit of improvement and exemplary conduct in educational centers in Spain.
During the meeting, President Luis Abinader congratulated the award-winning students and highlighted the effort, dedication and commitment that have led them to excel academically. The president stated that the winners “are an example for young Dominicans in Spain, in Europe and also in the Dominican Republic.” Likewise, he encouraged them to continue their training and keep their ties with their country of origin alive.
The student delegation was accompanied by the ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the Kingdom of Spain, Tony Raful, who thanked the president for his continued support of the program and highlighted the positive impact of the award on Dominican youth abroad.
Previously, the students held meetings with the governor of the Central Bank, Héctor Valdez Albizu; the Minister of the Interior and Police, FarideRaful, and the general director of the National Police, Major General Andrés Modesto CruzCruz, who shared their experiences with them and encouraged them to continue standing out for their academic excellence.
During their stay in the Dominican Republic, the young people have developed an intense institutional, educational and cultural agenda that has allowed them to learn up close the functioning of some of the country's main institutions. The program has also included visits to the National Congress, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Technological Institute of the Americas (ITLA) and the City Council of the National District.
Likewise, they have visited some of the most emblematic historical and cultural spaces of Santo Domingo, such as the Museum of the Royal Houses, the Museum of Resistance, the Casa del Cordón Taíno Cultural Center, the National Museum of History and Geography, the Museum of Modern Art, the Ozama Fortress and the National Aquarium. These activities are part of the official program of the 2026 School Merit Award.
The cultural and educational trip, which takes place from August 8 to 15, offers students the opportunity to strengthen their ties with the Dominican Republic, learn first-hand about its institutions and delve deeper into the historical and cultural legacy that is part of its identity.
The School Merit Award was created in 2008 by the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in Spain with the objective of recognizing academic excellence and promoting the educational and social integration of young Dominicans residing in that country, while strengthening their sense of belonging and their bond with the nation of origin.
The award has the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex), the Ministry of Education (Minerd), the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Women, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs, the Central Bank, the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), the Supreme Court of Justice, the Senate of the Republic, the Chamber of Deputies, the City Council of the National District, the INICIA Group, the Manuel García Arévalo Foundation and various cultural centers.
