Politie voert extra controles en surveillances uit tijdens vakantieperiode
With the holiday period just around the corner, the Suriname Police Corps (KPS) expects an increase in crowds on the roads, at recreational resorts and in public places. In conversation with the Communications Service Suriname on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Inspector Steve Fabre, interim spokesperson for the KPS, highlights the various safety measures. The force is preparing for a period in which extra alertness, visible presence and targeted supervision are necessary. The police usually notice an increase in various forms of crime and nuisance during holiday periods.
"I can say it briefly: crowds and increases. We see, among other things, an increase in home burglaries, because families leave the country or abroad for a longer period of time and social control around homes decreases as a result." Traffic and nightlife-related incidents also require extra attention. "We see unsocial behavior in traffic, reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. We also see street robberies and disturbances, with alcohol and drug use sometimes leading to fights."
According to Inspector Fabre, safety plans are drawn up per region. The police will conduct both conspicuous and inconspicuous surveillance, with extra attention to so-called hotspots and busy recreational areas. In particular, the traffic flow towards recreational areas in Para and Brokopondo will receive extra attention. “The traffic services will patrol those routes more often to ensure that traffic rules are adhered to,” the police official said.
He calls on road users to leave well prepared. “Please leave on time, check your vehicle before departure, pay attention to tire pressure and ensure that your driver's license and vehicle documents are in order.” Visitors to recreational resorts are also advised to use alcohol responsibly. "If you choose to consume alcohol, do not get behind the wheel. Make sure someone is always sober and has a valid driver's license to drive the vehicle."
At recreational resorts, the responsibility for young children lies primarily with parents or guardians. “If children can't swim, don't take them into deep water. And if they do swim, always stay nearby so you can intervene quickly.” The police warn young people and those staying at home not to publicly share information about their absence or being home alone via social media. Visibly displaying money and valuables is also discouraged.
Inspector Fabre calls on everyone to spend the holiday period safely and peacefully. "Go with the intention of having fun. Do not go with the intention of fighting. If something happens, contact the police. If you notice something suspicious, report it to your parents and the police. The police can easily be reached via 115. Even if something seems innocent, report it. You do not know whether you are helping to prevent a robbery or burglary. Fredeman ede n'e broko," says the inspector.

In gesprek met de Communicatie Dienst Suriname op donderdag 13 augustus 2026 belicht inspecteur Steve Fabre, interim-woordvoerder van het KPS, de verschillende veiligheidsmaatregelen. Het korps bereidt zich voor op een periode waarin extra alertheid, zichtbare aanwezigheid en gericht toezicht noodzakelijk zijn. De politie constateert tijdens vakantieperioden doorgaans een toename van verschillende vormen van criminaliteit en overlast. “Ik kan het kort zeggen: drukte en toename. We zien onder meer een toename in woninginbraken, omdat gezinnen voor langere tijd naar het binnenland of buitenland vertrekken en de sociale controle rond woningen daardoor vermindert.” Ook verkeers- en uitgaansgerelateerde incidenten vragen extra aandacht. “We zien onmaatschappelijk gedrag in het verkeer, roekeloos rijgedrag en rijden onder invloed van alcohol. Daarnaast zien we straatberovingen en ordeverstoringen, waarbij alcohol- en drugsgebruik soms leidt tot vechtpartijen.” Volgens inspecteur Fabre worden per regio veiligheidsplannen opgesteld. De politie zal zowel opvallend als onopvallend surveilleren, met extra aandacht voor zogenoemde hotspots en drukbezochte recreatieoorden. Met name de verkeersstroom richting recreatiegebieden in Para en Brokopondo krijgt extra aandacht. “De verkeersdiensten zullen vaker surveilleren op die routes om ervoor te zorgen dat men zich netjes aan de verkeersregels houdt,” meldt de politiefunctionaris. Hij roept weggebruikers op goed voorbereid te vertrekken. “Vertrek u op tijd, controleer vóór vertrek uw voertuig, let op de bandenspanning en zorg ervoor dat uw rijbewijs en voertuigdocumenten in orde zijn.” Bezoekers van recreatieoorden worden daarnaast geadviseerd verantwoord om te gaan met alcohol. “Als u ervoor kiest alcohol te nuttigen, neem dan geen plaats achter het stuur. Zorg ervoor dat er altijd iemand nuchter is en over een geldig rijbewijs beschikt om het voertuig te besturen.” Bij recreatieoorden ligt de verantwoordelijkheid voor jonge kinderen in de eerste plaats bij de ouders of verzorgers. “Als kinderen niet kunnen zwemmen, breng ze dan niet naar diep water. En als ze wel gaan zwemmen, blijf altijd in de buurt zodat u snel kunt ingrijpen.” De politie waarschuwt jongeren en thuisblijvers om geen informatie over hun afwezigheid of alleen thuis zijn openbaar te delen via sociale media. Ook het zichtbaar tonen van geld en waardevolle spullen wordt afgeraden. Inspecteur Fabre roept iedereen op de vakantieperiode vooral veilig en vreedzaam door te brengen. “Ga met de bedoeling om plezier te maken. Ga niet met de bedoeling om te vechten. Als er iets gebeurt, maak dan contact met de politie. Als u iets verdachts opmerkt, geef het door aan uw ouders en aan de politie. De politie is makkelijk te bereiken via 115. Ook als iets onschuldig lijkt, meld het. U weet niet of u daarmee juist een beroving of inbraak helpt voorkomen. Fredeman ede n’e broko”, geeft de inspecteur mee.
