LVV ondersteunt officiële start schooltuinproject op LBO Witsanti
A long-cherished wish of the management of the Lower Vocational Education (LBO) Witsanti to introduce students to horticulture in a practical and educational way has become reality. With the planting of the first vegetable plants on Thursday, August 13, 2026, the school garden project was officially launched.
The official start took place in the presence of Mrs. Frijasti Soepari-Karijosemito, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV), the district leaders of LVV Wanica-D Lelydorp and LVV Para, as well as representatives of the school and those involved in the initiative.
Prior to the official start, planting beds had already been created on the school grounds. Vegetable plants were also made available from the LVV Wanica-D resort, Lelydorp, with which the first phase of the school garden could be completed. During the official start, additional materials were donated from this district office, with which the school can eventually produce vegetable planting material itself and promote the continuity of the project.
The school garden has several goals. First of all, the project offers students the opportunity to develop practical agricultural skills. In addition, the garden contributes to self-sufficiency, because the proceeds can be used to prepare healthy, hot meals for the students. The possibilities of selling any surpluses from production are also being examined. The income from this can then be used to strengthen the school treasury, so that the school garden can contribute to the financial sustainability of the initiative in the long term.
The Ministry of LVV was approached for support of the project by Mr. Bryan Swedo, coordinator at the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor and also a district councilor and local resident. Based on his involvement in the community, he has worked to bring the different parties together and support the realization of the school garden. Based on its expertise and responsibility in the field of agricultural development, LVV responded to the initiative and provided support in the practical realization of the school garden.
The project offers students the opportunity to experience where food comes from and how much care and effort is needed to produce vegetables. At the same time, youth are becoming interested in agriculture as an important sector for the food supply and development of Suriname. The official start of the school garden project at LBO Witsanti marks an important first step. With the support of LVV and the efforts of the school and involved partners, we are working on a school garden that can provide educational, social and economic added value not only today, but also in the longer term.

Een lang gekoesterde wens van de leiding van het Lager Beroepsonderwijs (LBO) Witsanti om leerlingen op een praktische en educatieve wijze kennis te laten maken met tuinbouw, is werkelijkheid geworden. Met het planten van de eerste groenteplantjes is op donderdag 13 augustus 2026 officieel het startsein gegeven voor het schooltuinproject van de school. De officiële start vond plaats in aanwezigheid van mevrouw Frijasti Soepari-Karijosemito, namens de minister van Landbouw, Veeteelt en Visserij (LVV), de ressortleiders van LVV Wanica-D Lelydorp en LVV Para, alsook vertegenwoordigers van de school en betrokkenen bij het initiatief. Voorafgaand aan de officiële start waren op het schoolterrein reeds plantbedden aangelegd. Vanuit het ressort LVV Wanica-D, Lelydorp, werden daarnaast groenteplantjes ter beschikking gesteld, waarmee de eerste fase van de schooltuin kon worden ingevuld. Tijdens de officiële start zijn vanuit dit ressortkantoor bovendien aanvullende materialen gedoneerd, waarmee de school op termijn zelf groenteplantmateriaal kan aanmaken en de continuïteit van het project kan bevorderen. Met de schooltuin worden meerdere doelen nagestreefd. Allereerst biedt het project leerlingen de mogelijkheid om praktische landbouwvaardigheden te ontwikkelen. Daarnaast draagt de tuin bij aan zelfvoorzienendheid, doordat de opbrengst kan worden ingezet voor de bereiding van gezonde, warme maaltijden voor de leerlingen. Ook wordt gekeken naar de mogelijkheden om eventuele overschotten van de productie te verkopen. De inkomsten hieruit kunnen vervolgens worden aangewend om de schoolkas te versterken, waardoor de schooltuin op termijn mede kan bijdragen aan de financiële duurzaamheid van het initiatief. Het ministerie van LVV werd voor ondersteuning van het project benaderd door de heer Bryan Swedo, coördinator bij het Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Arbeid en tevens districtsraadslid en buurtbewoner. Vanuit zijn betrokkenheid bij de gemeenschap heeft hij zich ingezet om de verschillende partijen bij elkaar te brengen en de realisatie van de schooltuin te ondersteunen. LVV heeft vanuit zijn deskundigheid en verantwoordelijkheid op het gebied van landbouwontwikkeling gehoor gegeven aan het initiatief en ondersteuning geboden bij de praktische totstandkoming van de schooltuin. Het project biedt leerlingen de kans om te ervaren waar voedsel vandaan komt en hoeveel zorg en inspanning nodig zijn om groenten te produceren. Tegelijkertijd wordt bij de jeugd belangstelling gewekt voor landbouw als belangrijke sector voor de voedselvoorziening en ontwikkeling van Suriname. De officiële start van het schooltuinproject op LBO Witsanti markeert daarmee een belangrijke eerste stap. Met de ondersteuning van LVV en de inzet van de school en betrokken partners wordt gewerkt aan een schooltuin die niet alleen vandaag, maar ook op langere termijn educatieve, sociale en economische meerwaarde kan bieden.
