President Simons pleit voor behoud van malariavrije status Suriname
President Jennifer Simons advocates maintaining Suriname's malaria-free status. The head of state delivered the opening speech at the two-day 'Subregional meeting on malaria elimination in the Guiana Shield' on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The start of this meeting took place in the auditorium of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Labor (VWA). This is an initiative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The president underlined the importance of this meeting, as Suriname has succeeded in becoming the first country in the Amazon region to be malaria-free. “Today we look back on that effort with joy and pride and we are happy with the result. And now we face another challenge,” said the head of state. The meeting with countries from the region, including Brazil, Guyana and French Guiana, is of paramount importance to ensure that Suriname remains malaria-free.
President Simons further emphasized that the countries within the Guiana Shield and later the rest of South America will also become malaria-free. "Then we have been successful. I and no one here can promise you that we will achieve that in a few months. But I am sure, because we have seen it in Suriname, that with persistent effort and work it can indeed be achieved. And I am convinced that we will do so," said the head of state.
Protecting status on a daily basis According to the president, Suriname's current status is not the end point, but a beginning; a promise that must be protected daily. She pointed out the nature of Surinamese borders and the constant movement between the border communities. Monitoring mining activities is also crucial for maintaining the malaria-free status. According to the head of state, it is important that information remains at a high level. “Our population is only guaranteed protection against malaria if we apply these approaches, persevere, are in constant consultation and also coordinate the implementation of the programs.”
“Because elimination requires an integrated approach to public health, mining and safety,” the president continued. She emphasized that the goldfields should not be breeding grounds for disease. This requires that the Ministries of Health, Natural Resources, Justice and Security work intensively together to make healthcare a priority. “Also in the mining sector. Suriname is ready to take responsibility in this.”
With the Surinamese Malaria Program as a Regional Center of Excellence, Suriname offers its expertise, network, experience and knowledge to train field workers and doctors from neighboring countries. However, in order to fulfill this role as knowledge, it is crucial that Suriname maintains its own healthcare infrastructure in the interior through the Medical Mission for elimination surveillance. “Let's work towards a regional and digital warning platform, bring care and diagnostics directly to the gold fields and coordinate surveillance,” said President Simons.

Maar ik weet zeker, omdat we het hebben gezien in Suriname, dat met volgehouden inspanning en werk het wel degelijk te bereiken is. En ik ben ervan overtuigd dat we dat zullen doen”, aldus het staatshoofd. Status dagelijks beschermenDe huidige status van Suriname is volgens de president niet het eindpunt, maar een begin; een belofte die dagelijks moet worden beschermd. Zij wees op de aard van Surinames grenzen en de constante beweging tussen de grensgemeenschappen. Ook het monitoren van mijnbouwactiviteiten is cruciaal voor het behouden van de malariavrije status. Volgens het staatshoofd is het belangrijk dat de voorlichting op een hoog niveau blijft. “Onze bevolking is alleen gegarandeerd van bescherming tegen malaria als we deze benaderingen toepassen, volhouden, constant in overleg zijn en ook de uitvoering van de programma’s op elkaar afstemmen.” “Want eliminatie vraagt om een geïntegreerde aanpak van volksgezondheid, mijnbouw en veiligheid”, ging de president verder. Zij benadrukte dat de goudvelden geen broedplaatsen moeten zijn voor ziekten. Dit vereist dat de ministeries van Volksgezondheid, Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen, Justitie en Veiligheid intensief samenwerken om de gezondheidszorg tot een prioriteit te maken. “Ook in de mijnbouwsector. Suriname staat klaar om hierin mede verantwoordelijkheid te nemen.” Suriname biedt met het Surinaams Malaria Programma als Regional Centre of Excellence zijn expertise, netwerk, ervaring en kennis aan om veldwerkers en artsen uit buurlanden op te leiden. Om deze rol als kennis te kunnen vervullen, is het echter cruciaal dat Suriname zijn eigen zorginfrastructuur in het binnenland via de Medische Zending op peil houdt voor eliminatiesurveillance. “Laten we werken naar een regionaal en digitaal waarschuwingsplatform, zorg en diagnostiek direct naar de goudvelden brengen en surveillance op elkaar afstemmen”, aldus president Simons.
