Today, from 17:00, I held a telephone conversation with King Haitham of Oman, the second time since April, based on the latest situation in the Middle East.
I emphasized that the situation surrounding Iran is at an important stage, and that it is important to calm down the situation as soon as possible and steadily resolve various issues, including the nuclear issue, in accordance with the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, and stated that Japan will continue to make every diplomatic effort to foster the necessary environment.
Furthermore, I stated that it is important that "free and safe navigation without additional costs" be restored in the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, and that for this purpose we need to have thorough discussions with the international community, including the countries that use the strait.
In response, King Haitham explained the current situation regarding negotiations with Iran and Oman's position.
Regarding the future of the Strait of Hormuz, he assured that he would consult with the countries that use the strait, and stated that he would respect the wishes of each country.
We look forward to continuing to work closely with Oman towards peace and stability in the region, including the Strait of Hormuz.

本日、１７時から、最新の中東情勢を踏まえ、オマーンのハイサム国王との間で、４月以来、２回目となる電話会談を行いました。 私からは、イランをめぐる情勢が重要な局面を迎える中、一刻も早く事態の早期沈静化が図られ、米・イラン間の覚書に沿って、核問題を含め諸課題を着実に解決していくことが重要である旨を強調し、日本は引き続き必要な環境醸成のため、あらゆる外交努力を重ねていく旨を述べました。 さらに、私からは、ホルムズ海峡における「追加的費用のない形での自由で安全な航行」が一刻も早く回復されることが重要であり、そのために、海峡利用国を含む国際社会ともしっかり話し合っていただくことが必要である旨を述べました。 これに対し、ハイサム国王からは、イランとの協議に関する現状及びオマーンの立場について、説明がありました。 ホルムズ海峡のあり方については、海峡利用国と協議をすることを確約していただき、各国の意思も尊重する旨のご発言がありました。 今後も、ホルムズ海峡を含む地域の平和と安定に向け、オマーンと緊密に連携していきたいと考えています。
