Today, at 4:20 p.m., I held my fourth telephone conversation with President Pezeshkian of Iran, based on the latest situation in the Middle East.
I pointed out the importance of easing the current military tensions and calming down the situation as soon as possible, given that the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz is at an important stage and Iran is continuing to communicate with relevant countries toward the opening of the Strait. He also conveyed Japan's position that it is necessary for the United States and Iran to hold discussions in accordance with the memorandum of understanding and reach a final agreement, including on the nuclear issue, as soon as possible, and expressed his strong hope that the situation will be "calmed down through diplomacy" as soon as possible.
Furthermore, regarding the Strait of Hormuz, he emphasized the importance of "free and safe navigation without additional costs," and called for thorough discussions with the international community, including the countries that use the strait. In addition, from the perspective of energy security, he conveyed his concerns regarding the current situation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and urged the Houthis to exercise strong restraint.
In addition, regarding the protection of Japanese nationals, we once again requested the early resolution of the issue surrounding a Japanese national who was released on bail in April after being detained in Iran.
In response, President Pezeshkian explained the Iranian side's thinking, including the current status and future prospects of its exchanges with Oman regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Regarding the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, it was explained that Japan is working to resolve the issue through dialogue with Saudi Arabia.
We will continue to maintain close communication with Iran.

本日、16時20分から、最新の中東情勢を踏まえ、イランのペゼシュキアン大統領との間で４回目の電話会談を行いました。 私からは、ホルムズ海峡をめぐる情勢が重要な局面を迎える中、同海峡の開放に向けて、イランが関係国との間でやり取りを続けていることを踏まえ、現在の軍事的緊張を緩和し、一刻も早く事態を沈静化することの重要性を指摘しました。また、米国とイランが、覚書に沿って協議を行い、核問題を含め最終的な合意に早期に至ることが必要であるとの日本の立場を伝え、「外交を通じた事態の沈静化」が早期に実現することを強く期待する旨述べました。 さらに、ホルムズ海峡については、「追加的費用のない形での自由で安全な航行」が重要であることを強調するとともに、海峡利用国を含む国際社会ともしっかり話し合うよう求めました。加えて、エネルギー安全保障の観点からも、バブ・エル・マンデブ海峡の現状に係る懸念を伝達し、ホーシー派に対して自制を強く働きかけるよう求めました。 このほか、邦人保護に関して、イラン国内で拘束後、４月に保釈された邦人１名をめぐる問題の早期解決を改めて要請しました。 これに対し、ペゼシュキアン大統領からは、ホルムズ海峡をめぐるオマーンとのやり取りの現状及び今後の見通しを含め、イラン側の考えについて説明がありました。バブ・エル・マンデブ海峡については、サウジアラビアとも対話をしながら、問題解決に努めているとの説明がありました。 今後も、イランとは緊密に意思疎通を続けていきます。
