Gobierno destaca las condiciones de RD para impulsar la competitividad y el desarrollo regional
Santo Domingo.-The Dominican Government highlighted the strategic conditions that the country has to promote competitiveness and regional development as part of its commitment to cooperation and growth in Central American countries.
The proposal was made by the Ministers of Finance and Economy, Magín Díaz, and the Minister of Industry, Commerce and MSMEs (MICM), Yayo Sanz Lovatón, who participated in the Ministerial Dialogue: Connectivity and integration for a more competitive region, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in Panama City.
When making the statement, both officials recognized not only the privileged geographical location of the country but also legal security, specific public policies, high air and maritime connectivity, as well as the economic and social dynamism with a gross domestic product that grows 4.5% during the first half of the year, which is above the regional average.
Both Díaz and Sanz Lovatón spoke in the presence of ministers, high authorities, business leaders and representatives of international organizations who gathered at the event held on August 11 and 12, 2026.
As part of his agenda, Díaz spoke in the first session of the meeting “A regional agenda to strengthen connectivity, logistics and trade facilitation.”
“We have what few countries in the world have, which is a privileged geographical position and in this time of nearshoring, with the United States so close, I believe that Central America and the Dominican Republic are key to benefiting from that reality and being able to do commerce in a world with constant uncertainty and changes,” he pointed out.
For his part, the MICM minister explained that the region must move from sequential controls to borders that manage risks, share information and facilitate legitimate trade.
“The Dominican Republic is ready to contribute to the regional agenda that is being proposed in this important meeting. We are interested in moving towards interoperable, multimodal and results-oriented regional logistics integration,” added Sanz Lovatón.
Furthermore, during their interventions, economic priorities were identified to convert connectivity, logistics and trade facilitation into drivers of growth, competitiveness and investment for the countries of the region.
The meeting is part of America in the Center, a regional development program that brings together Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic around common and cross-border challenges, with the purpose of promoting a more integrated, productive and resilient region. The initiative seeks to strengthen regional infrastructure, facilitate participation in global value chains, promote investment and improve energy and logistics connectivity.
One of the central axes of America in the Center is the strengthening of sustainable regional infrastructure, through the modernization of logistics corridors, the improvement of energy connectivity and the facilitation of cross-border trade. These actions seek to improve access to markets, attract investments, increase productivity and promote the incorporation of the countries of the region into global value chains.

Como parte de su agenda Díaz intervino en la primera sesión del encuentro “Una agenda regional para fortalecer la conectividad, la logística y la facilitación del comercio”. “Tenemos lo que pocos países del mundo tienen, que es una posición geográfica privilegiada y en esta época delnearshoringteniendo a Estados Unidos tan cerca creo que Centroamérica y República Dominicana somos clave para beneficiarnos de esa realidad y poder hacer comercio en un mundo con constante incertidumbre y cambios”,puntualizó. De su lado, el ministro del MICM explicó que la región debe avanzar de controles secuenciales hacia fronteras que gestionen riesgos, compartan información y faciliten elcomercio legítimo. “República Dominicana está lista para contribuir con la agenda regional que se está planteando en este importante encuentro, tenemos interés en avanzar hacia una integración logística regional interoperable, multimodal y orientada a resultados”,añadió Sanz Lovatón. Además, durante sus intervenciones, se identificaron lasprioridades económicaspara convertir la conectividad, la logística y la facilitación del comercio en motores decrecimiento, competitividad e inversiónpara los países de la región. El encuentro forma parte deAmérica en el Centro, un programa de desarrollo regional que reúne aCentroamérica, Panamá y República Dominicanaen torno a desafíos comunes y transfronterizos, con el propósito de impulsar una regiónmás integrada, productiva y resiliente. La iniciativa busca fortalecer la infraestructura regional, facilitar la participación en cadenas de valor globales,promover la inversióny mejorar laconectividad energética y logística. Uno de los ejes centrales de América en el Centro es el fortalecimiento de lainfraestructura regional sostenible, mediante la modernización de corredores logísticos, la mejora de la conectividad energética y la facilitación delcomercio transfronterizo. Estas acciones buscan mejorar el acceso a mercados, atraer inversiones,elevar la productividady favorecer la incorporación de los países de la región a las cadenas globales de valor.
