A delegation from the Small-scale Gold Sector Regulation Committee (OKGS) has visited the Brownsberg Nature Park. This happened on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. During the visit to the nature park, which is a protected area and is managed by the Foundation for Nature Conservation Suriname (STINASU), specific attention was paid to the locations where illegal gold mining activities take place.
The committee has taken into custody equipment for gold mining in the vicinity of the Irene Falls. Illegal gold diggers were subsequently ordered to leave the area. OKGS also discussed the established boundary line with STINASU. This boundary provides clarity about where no gold mining activities may take place.
RegistrationDuring the orientation visit, discussions were also held about the importance of registering small-scale gold miners. In the second week of July 2026, the committee started a soft launch for people working in or connected to the gold sector. This pilot project has a duration of six months. Within this project, the OKGS carries out registrations in various areas. Persons wishing to register can do so at the OKGS office at Mr. Jagernath Lachmonstraat 181.
Objective of the committee The aim of the committee is to manage the risks relating to the small-scale gold mining sector, which includes environmental problems, curbing illegality, combating crime and regulating the financial context. For example, the State of Suriname must collect more money from the sector, from production to export.
In its work, OKGS collaborates with various agencies, including the Ministries of Justice and Security, Defense, Natural Resources, STINASU, traditional authorities and district commissioners (depending on the area where the committee is active). The Brownsberg area will be visited again in the foreseeable future.

Dit gebeurde op dinsdag 11 augustus 2026. Tijdens het bezoek aan het natuurpark, dat beschermd gebied is en wordt beheerd door de Stichting Natuurbehoud Suriname (STINASU), is specifiek gekeken naar de locaties waar illegale goudwinningsactiviteiten plaatsvinden. In de omgeving van de Irenevallen heeft de commissie equipment voor goudwinning in bewaring genomen. Vervolgens zijn illegale goudzoekers gesommeerd om zich uit het gebied te verwijderen. OKGS heeft ook de vastgestelde grenslijn met STINASU besproken. Deze grens biedt duidelijkheid over waar geen goudwinningsactiviteiten mogen plaatsvinden. RegistratieTijdens het oriëntatiebezoek zijn eveneens gesprekken gevoerd over het belang van registratie van kleinschalige goudmijnbouwers. In de tweede week van juli 2026 startte de commissie met een soft launch voor personen die werkzaam zijn in óf verbonden aan de goudsector. Dit pilot-project heeft een duur van zes maanden. Binnen dit project voert de OKGS registraties uit in verschillende gebieden. Personen die zich willen registreren, kunnen zich hiervoor aanmelden bij het OKGS-kantoor aan de Mr. Jagernath Lachmonstraat 181. Doel commissieHet doel van de commissie is de beheersing van de risico’s die betrekking hebben op de kleinschalige goudmijnsector waartoe onder andere behoren de milieuproblematiek, indammen van de illegaliteit, criminaliteitsbestrijding en het reguleren van de financiële context. Zo moet de Staat Suriname meer geld uit de sector innen, vanaf de productie tot de export. OKGS werkt bij haar werkzaamheden samen met verschillende instanties, waaronder de ministeries van Justitie en Veiligheid, Defensie, Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen, STINASU, traditionele gezagdragers en districtscommissarissen (afhankelijk van het gebied waar de commissie actief is).
