Home»Office of the President»Pulmonologist Gopie warns of health risks from smoke, particulate matter and Sahara dust
Fire smoke and particulate matter from landfills and forest fires, among other things, can pose significant health risks. The Communications Service Suriname (CDS) spoke with pulmonologist Fitzgerald Gopie of the University Hospital Paramaribo (AZP) on August 12, 2026, following the fire at the Ornamibo landfill, forest fires during the dry period and the recurring presence of Sahara dust. The doctor advises society to be alert to complaints and to protect themselves as best as possible in the event of smoke development.
According to Dr. Gopie, fire produces ash and smoke, among other things. In addition, chemical substances that are harmful to health can be produced, especially during fires at waste dumps. He adds: "These substances can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, mouth and other mucous membranes. When inhaled, the airways can also become irritated, resulting in coughing and shortness of breath." For people with asthma, exposure can be extra dangerous.
"Smoke can very quickly trigger a reaction in asthma patients. This allergic reaction can lead to severe narrowing of the airways and, in the worst case, even to death if help or medication is not provided in time," says the pulmonologist. According to Dr. Gopie, the Sahara dust can cause similar complaints. "Saharan dust can also be categorized as particulate matter. It can cause irritation and narrow the airways when inhaled, which can cause an asthma or shortness of breath attack."
According to the pulmonologist, complaints can arise shortly after exposure. "If you are close by and have inhaled smoke, you can develop complaints within half an hour. By the time you feel like you can't breathe, it may already be quite late. You have to try to prevent it from happening." If there is severe shortness of breath, a tight throat or increasing breathing problems, medical attention should be sought. Dr. Gopie: "Preferably first find a doctor or emergency room in the immediate area. You don't have to wait until it gets worse."
To limit exposure, the pulmonologist recommends, among other things, keeping windows and doors closed and using a mouth mask when the outside air is highly polluted. Air conditioning can be used as long as polluted outside air is not drawn in. In view of the expected heat, the doctor recommends drinking enough water, seeking shade and avoiding strenuous exercise during the hottest hours. Anyone who has to work in the sun should wear protective cotton clothing. “Stay alert to your surroundings and your health condition. Whenever you think something is wrong, seek help,” says Dr. Gopie.

Gopie. © 2026 GOV.SR |Privacy Policy|Cookie Policy
