Cairo, Aug. 12 (SANA)Arab Parliament Speaker, Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, affirmed Wednesday that the Golan is an occupied Arab Syrian territory and that no stance or declaration by an individual state can alter its legal status or affect the Syrian Arab Republic’s established rights over it.

“We strongly condemn Colombia’s recognition of Israeli occupation sovereignty over theoccupied Syrian Golan,” Al Yamahi said in a statement, describing the move as a flagrant violation of international law, an unacceptable disregard for international legitimacy resolutions and an attempt to provide political cover for an illegal situation.

Al Yamahi saidUN Security CouncilResolution 497 of 1981 provides a clear international reference for the legal status of the occupied Syrian Golan.

The resolution rejected measures taken by the Israeli occupation authorities to impose their laws, jurisdiction and administration on the territory, Al-Yamahi said, adding that any subsequent attempts to entrench that situation or treat it as legitimate are null and void and have no legal effect.

TheArab Parliamentcalled on the Colombian government to immediately reconsider and reverse its position and abide by international law and relevant UN resolutions.

It also warned that such positions could have serious repercussions for efforts to achieve peace, security and stability in the region.

The Arab Parliament reiterated its full support for the Syrian Arab Republic in restoring its sovereignty over the entire occupied Syrian Golan.

Colombia’s statement, issued on Aug. 10, has drawn widespread Arab condemnation. Syria has reaffirmed that the Golan is an integral part of its territory and said the Colombian government’s statement constitutes a flagrant violation of the UN Charter.
