Prime Minister, you have just concluded a summit telephone talk with His Majesty Haitham, Sultan of Oman. Could you tell us what was discussed regarding the situation in the Middle East? Also, did your discussion touch on the ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran?

From 5:00 p.m. to 5:20 p.m. today, I held my second telephone talk with H.M. Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said, Sultan of Oman, since April, in light of the latest developments in the Middle East.

I emphasized that, at a time when the situation surrounding Iran has reached a critical juncture, it is essential to achieve a de-escalation of tensions as soon as possible and to steadily address the various outstanding issues, including the nuclear issue, in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran. I also stated that Japan will continue to make every possible diplomatic effort to help create an environment conducive to those objectives.

In addition, I stressed the importance of restoring, as soon as possible, free and safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz without imposing additional costs, and noted that, to that end, it is important for Oman to engage in discussions with the international community, including the countries that use the Strait.

In response, His Majesty Sultan Haitham explained the current status of discussions with Iran as well as Oman's position.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, His Majesty affirmed that Oman would hold consultations with the countries that use the Strait and stated that their views would be fully respected.

Japan will continue to work closely with Oman toward maintaining peace and stability in the region, including the Strait of Hormuz.
