Ministerio de Deportes anuncia los Juegos Juan Pablo Duarte NY 2026
Santo Domingo.– The Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, announced this Tuesday the celebration of the Juan Pablo Duarte 2026 Games, an initiative that seeks to promote sports practice, strengthen integration and strengthen ties between the Dominican Republic and the Dominican community residing in the United States.
Cruz reported that the event, which will be held from this Friday the 14th to Sunday the 23rd, will be dedicated to the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), José Joaquín Puello, and the sprinter Felicia Candelario, in recognition of their respective careers in sports, which took them to the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame.
“More than 2,000 Dominican athletes and children of Dominicans will be celebrating with us this coming Friday in what will be the second version of the Juan Pablo Duarte New York Games during my administration of almost two years,” said Cruz.
He added that "this is a joint effort of the Ministry of Sports, the New York Consulate, the Reserve Bank and other entities that also support us, so we will always be greatly grateful to them."
This is the second consecutive year that the Cruz administration celebrates these games, after a lethargy of several years that ended with the successful 2025 edition.
The announcement was made during an event held in the James Rodríguez Hall of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (Miderec), with the presence of Minister Cruz; former senator, Jesús “Chu” Vásquez, consul general of the Dominican Republic in New York; Evaristo Madrigal, president of the Dominican Sports Union of New York; the president of the Dominican Olympic Committee (COD), Garibaldy Bautista, and the vice minister Kennedy Vargas, general coordinator of the games, as well as representatives linked to the organization of the contest.
The Juan Pablo Duarte 2026 Games will bring together more than 2,000 athletes from New York, Rhode Island, Lawrence, Pennsylvania and Boston, who will compete in 22 sports disciplines, on a day that will also include cultural and artistic exhibitions.
The main venue of the activity will be the George Washington School, in Manhattan, and athletes from Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens will participate, as well as invited delegations from Connecticut and New Jersey.
The minister highlighted that the government of President Luis Abinader maintains the commitment to using sport as a tool for social transformation, integration and promotion of national values, including Dominicans who reside outside the national territory.
Cruz also highlighted that the Juan Pablo Duarte Games will identify and stimulate new sporting talents within the diaspora, while serving as a platform to promote Dominican culture and the sense of belonging among the new generations.
For their part, Vásquez and Madrigal highlighted Minister Cruz's vision of rescuing these games and honoring the word of celebrating them every year, without leaving them forgotten.
