Apple tests tool to verify photos captured by iPhone cameras
Washington, Aug. 12 (SANA)Apple is testing a feature for its upcoming iOS 27 operating system that could allow users to verify whether a photo was originally captured by an iPhone camera, as AI-generated and manipulated images become increasingly widespread. The feature, reportedly calledAppleReference Image, was identified in the fifth beta release of iOS 27. It is designed to authenticate a photo’s origin using data associated with the camera hardware that captured it.The system would record information when an image is captured, including sensor-related data and metadata, through a new setting in the Camera app called Reference mode. After taking a photo in that mode, users would be able to request authentication of its origin. Information associated with the image would then be processed through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure to verify that it originated from an iPhone camera. The process is intended to authenticate the source of an image rather than function as a conventional AI-image detector. In other words, it focuses on establishing that an original image came from iPhone camera hardware rather than trying to determine whether an arbitrary image was generated by artificial intelligence. The distinction is important because authentication of the source does not necessarily provide a universal test for whether any visual content is AI-generated or manipulated. If officially introduced, the feature could provide journalists, photographers and media organizations with an additional method for establishing the provenance of visual material before publication.Apple has not officially confirmed that Apple Reference Image will be included in the final release ofiOS 27. The feature remains under development and could be modified, delayed or dropped before the operating system is released to users. The development comes as technology companies explore ways to establish the provenance and authenticity of digital content amid the growing availability of tools capable of generating and manipulating realistic images.R.D/RK
