Damascus, Aug. 12 (SANA)TheSyrian Arab Republichas submitted an official letter to UN Secretary-GeneralAntónio Guterresand the President of theUN Security Council, expressing its protest, condemnation and categorical rejection of Colombia’s recognition of what it called “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan.

Syria had strongly condemned on Tuesday a statement issued by Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 10, 2026, recognizing what it called “Israeli sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian Golan, affirming that the Golan is an integral part of Syrian territory.

Syria said theColombian government’sstatement constitutes a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and of statements by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirming that the Golan is Syrian territory. It also constitutes a violation of the principle prohibiting the acquisition of territory by force and of UN Security Council Resolution 497 of 1981, Syria said.

Syria reiterated its categorical rejection of the continued Israeli attacks and incursions into its territory, calling on all states and international organizations to uphold their responsibilities in respecting international law and UN resolutions.

It also reaffirmed that it would continue to use all legitimate diplomatic and legal means to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity and established rights, and to work toward restoring its occupied territory.

The Colombian decision has drawn widespread Arab and international condemnation and rejection, with reaffirmations that the Golan is Syrian territory under Israeli occupation.

TheUN Security Council adopted Resolution 497 in December 1981, declaring Israel’s decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian Golan null and void and without international legal effect, and calling on Israel to rescind it.
