August 20: a thousand-year-old holiday with valuable traditions and contemporary elements
The national holiday on August 20 brings the usual popular programs, expanded with spectacular light elements, but shorter than before. The government is prepared for the smooth and safe conduct of the events.
In addition to the history of the founding of the state, August 20 is about the community, so the motto of the visual creative workshop Centrum Production, responsible for the creative-artistic concept of the programs, was that the holiday should belong to all Hungarians. When compiling the program offer, it was important to preserve the valuable traditions, while renewing the national holiday with modern and contemporary elements.
This year's series of events was entitled "August 20: the nation's holiday, a thousand years together in Europe". The organizers offer different programs to visitors of different styles and ages. Margitsziget in the capital will be mainly for families during the day, with lots of children's programs, and in the evening people will be entertained by a light show and concerts.
Kossuth square in Budapest meets tradition and contemporary celebration, Szabadság square becomes a meeting point, and Műyegetem wharf becomes the venue for electronic music programs for young people.
The well-known, traditional elements remain important parts of the holiday, such as the clean-up, the air parade, the Street of Hungarian Flavors, the Festival of Crafts, the Saint Jobb procession and the festive mass, the open Parliament, and the national defense programs in the city park. The Carmelite Monastery in Buda Castle and the former Prime Minister's Office building can be visited for free, but registration is required during the holiday weekend.
The central event of the evening will be the audio-visual show "Chapters from the Thousand-Year History of the Hungarian Nation" on the quays in front of the Parliament and on the Danube. The visuals of the 30-minute program are based on Hungarian painting, architecture and ornamental motifs. The projection, music, light, laser, drone show and pyrotechnics tell a larger story, culminating in approximately 10 minutes of fireworks.
The show will be best enjoyed from the Buda side, between the Chain Bridge and Margaret Bridge. Unusually, the light show will be repeated twice later in the evening, without the fireworks and drones.
The festive audiovisual show is the joint work of more than 30-40 creators, nearly 200 partners and subcontractors, more than 1,000 people, are involved in the implementation of the entire series of events. The government is prepared for the smooth and safe conduct of all events related to August 20. The organizers, the police and the directors of the individual events cooperate closely with each other. The preparation of the national events was carried out by an interdepartmental coordinating working group, and the Defense Administration Office created an operational staff to supervise the implementation.
The government asks the celebrants to pay close attention to each other and to comply with the organizers' requests. If possible, the locations should be approached by public transport, and in crowded areas, do not lose sight of small children and the elderly. Listen to possible weather alerts and immediately move to a safe, covered place in the event of a storm warning.
As part of the presentation of the holiday programs, it was announced that this year Hungary's cake will be the "Bíborfehér" creation of the Gyula Artisan Confectionery. Hungary's sugar-free cake in 2026 is the "Szilvafácska" cake of Promenád Cukrászda in Balatongyörök. The winner of the Szent István day bread category was Pityókás bread from Hel Pékség, among the innovative breads Sütőmix Kft.'s Magvető bread won, while the first place in the leafy walking cake category was Pedró Pékség's Citromvirág cake.

Augusztus 20-a az államalapítás történetén túl a közösségről szól, ezért a programok kreatív-művészeti koncepciójáért felelő Centrum Production vizuális alkotóműhely mottója az volt, hogy az ünnep minden magyar emberé legyen. A programkínálat összeállításakor szempont volt, hogy megmaradjanak az értékes tradíciók, miközben modern és kortárs elemekkel újuljon meg a nemzeti ünnep. Az idei rendezvénysorozat az „Augusztus 20.: a nemzet ünnepe, ezer éve együtt Európában” címet kapta. A szervezők a különböző stílusú, különböző korú látogatóknak más-más programot kínálnak. A fővárosi Margitsziget nappal elsősorban a családoké lesz, rengeteg gyerekprogrammal, este pedig fénykiállítás és koncertek szórakoztatják az embereket. A budapesti Kossuth téren összeér a tradíció és a kortárs ünneplés, a Szabadság tér egy találkozási ponttá válik, a Műegyetem rakpart pedig a fiataloknak szóló elektronikus zenei programok helyszíne lesz. Az ünnep fontos részei maradnak a jól ismert, hagyományos elemek, mint például a tisztavatás, a légiparádé, a Magyar Ízek utcája, a Mesterségek Ünnepe, a Szent Jobb-körmenet és az ünnepi szentmise, a nyitott Parlament, illetve a városligeti honvédelmi programok. A Budai Várban található Karmelita kolostor és a volt Miniszterelnöki Kabinetiroda épülete is ingyenesen, de regisztrációhoz kötve látogatható az ünnepi hétvégén. Az este központi eseménye a „Fejezetek a magyar nemzet ezeréves történetéből” című audiovizuális show lesz a Parlament előtti rakpartokon és a Dunán. A 30 perces műsor látványvilága a magyar festészeti, építészeti és ornamentikai motívumokra támaszkodik. A vetítés, a zene, a fény, a lézer, a drónshow és a pirotechnika egy nagyobb történetet mesél el, amelynek a körülbelül 10 perces tűzijáték lesz a fináléja. A műsor a budai oldalról, a Lánchíd és a Margit híd közötti területről lesz leginkább élvezhető. Rendhagyó módon a fényshow-t később az este folyamán kétszer megismétlik, a tűzijáték és a drónok nélkül. Az ünnepi audiovizuális show több mint 30-40 alkotó közös munkája, a teljes rendezvénysorozat megvalósításában közel 200 partner és alvállalkozó, több mint 1000 ember vesz részt. A kormány felkészült az augusztus 20-ához kapcsolódó valamennyi rendezvény zavartalan és biztonságos lebonyolítására. A szervezők, a rendőrség és az egyes események rendezői szorosan együttműködnek egymással. A nemzeti rendezvények előkészítését tárcaközi koordináló munkacsoport végezte, a Védelmi Igazgatási Hivatal pedig operatív törzset hozott létre a lebonyolítás felügyeletére. A kormány azt kéri az ünneplőktől, hogy fokozottan figyeljenek egymásra, és tartsák be a rendezők kéréseit. A helyszíneket lehetőség szerint tömegközlekedéssel közelítsék meg, a zsúfolt területeken ne veszítsék szem elől a kisgyermekeket és időseket. Figyeljék az esetleges időjárási riasztásokat, és viharjelzés esetén azonnal vonuljanak biztonságos, fedett helyre. Az ünnepi programok ismertetésének részeként kihirdették, hogy idén Magyarország tortája a gyulai Kézműves Cukrászda "Bíborfehér" nevű alkotása lett. Magyarország cukormentes tortája 2026-ban a balatongyöröki Promenád Cukrászda "Szilvafácska" nevű süteménye. A Szent István napi kenyér kategória győztese a Hel Pékség Pityókás kenyere, az innovatív kenyerek közül a Sütőmix Kft. Magvető kenyere győzött, míg a leveles sétáló sütemény kategória első helyezettje a Pedró Pékség Citromvirág süteménye lett.
