Presidente del Indotel destaca la conectividad digital como clave para la competitividad del Caribe en Canto 2026
PuntaCana.–The president of the Board of Directors of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel), Guido Gómez Mazara, stated that digital connectivity has become a strategic factor for competitiveness, investment, social inclusion and economic development of the Caribbean countries.
Delivering the welcome remarks at the 41st Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Caribbean Association of National Telecommunications Organizations (Canto), Gómez Mazara highlighted that the Dominican Republic is committed to transforming its production model by developing technological infrastructure and strengthening the digital economy.
He highlighted the country's strategic projects, including the investment of more than USD 500 million announced for digital exchange infrastructure, the strengthening of international connectivity through submarine cables and the progress in the implementation of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
Likewise, he highlighted the creation of national capabilities in artificial intelligence and the efforts to integrate the country into the global value chains of the semiconductor industry.
“The Dominican Republic does not only consume technology, but is inspired to produce it,” stated the official from the regulatory body.
In terms of telecommunications, he pointed out that Indotel works on the expansion of 4G and 5G networks, the management of the radio spectrum and actions aimed at reducing the digital divide and strengthening competition in the market.
Gómez Mazara maintained that regulation must create the conditions to attract investments and guarantee affordable and quality telecommunications services, preventing citizens from being excluded from the digital economy for reasons of cost, geography or lack of skills.
He also noted the formal incorporation of the institution into Canto, making this conference the first annual participation of the Dominican regulatory body as a member of the association.
He considered regional cooperation a strategic necessity to face technological challenges and share regulatory experiences between countries with similar challenges.
“Being part of the ecosystem gives us access to conversations that form the Caribbean digital future,” he expressed.
Gómez Mazara stated that Canto's vision of advancing from connectivity towards global competitiveness coincides with the strategy developed by the Dominican Republic, while highlighting the potential of the Caribbean to attract high-value investments and develop new technological capabilities.
The 41st Annual Singing Conference and Exhibition takes place August 9-12 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, with an agenda focused on connectivity, innovation, investment, regulation and digital competitiveness.
