Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi Meets the Chairman and Members of the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee ••••• Prime Minister Ali Faleh Al-Zaidi met today, Tuesday, with the Chairman of the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee, Mr. Khalid Mutaib Al-Obaidi, and the members of the Committee. During the meeting, the situation in the country was reviewed, along with the efforts undertaken by the security agencies, across their various branches and formations, to maintain security and stability and protect the country’s borders and airspace against various threats, particularly in light of the developments and repercussions in the region. The Prime Minister directed the preparation of a bill to confine arms exclusively to state authority, in accordance with constitutional procedures. He stated that uncontrolled weapons pose the most serious threat to the state, as they undermine the authority of the law and weaken the standing of security institutions. He emphasized the importance of strengthening the standing of the state, its sovereignty and prestige, and its constitutional institutions, as well as enhancing the capabilities of the military establishment to ensure internal stability, which is linked to economic, political, and security stability, thereby safeguarding Iraq’s security and safety and the resources and wealth of its people. The Prime Minister stressed the need for integrated efforts and coordination between the executive and legislative authorities to strengthen stability, enact legislation, and provide the legislative framework for the government’s development plans and programs. He also emphasized the importance of holding regular meetings with the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee to advance these issues. For his part, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Security and Defence Committee affirmed the Committee’s support, through its oversight and legislative role, for all government measures and steps aimed at strengthening the state and its security and military institutions, foremost among them enhancing the capabilities of the armed forces, protecting the borders, developing air defence systems, and raising the level of readiness to safeguard Iraq’s security and preserve its sovereignty from the repercussions of regional and international crises. ••••• Media Office of the Prime Minister August 11, 2026
