A fire broke out at the Ornamibo landfill on Monday afternoon, releasing large amounts of smoke. According to District Commissioner Ernesto Muller of Wanica-Southeast, the matter is now under control. The mayor said in conversation with the Communications Service Suriname (CDS) on Tuesday, August 11, that after he received the report around 2:30 PM to 2:45 PM, the fire brigade and police were immediately called in. The situation developed in the evening hours from a small fire into a sea of flames with a lot of smoke. According to the DC, such a situation entails risks for both people and the environment.
According to DC Muller, the fire was under control on Tuesday, August 11. However, the fire brigade remained on site, because it cannot be ruled out that the fire is still smoldering at the bottom of the approximately nine-metre high waste mountain. According to the fire brigade, the white smoke that is still visible does not indicate an open fire. “But all in all, the fire brigade doesn't take a chance, because you have to keep it under control in any case,” said the mayor. There is currently no certainty about the cause. There may be arson. “But there are no cameras, so that cannot be confirmed,” says the DC.
The mayor indicates that Ornamibo has had to deal with fires before and that the consequences are serious for the environment. DC Muller therefore advocates preventive measures. He indicated to the fire brigade and the Ministry of Public Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO) that water hoses with sprinklers can be used to keep parts of the site moist. In this way, starting fires can be prevented from spreading.
The district commissioner himself is no longer in favor of Ornamibo. “I think we now have to move towards more modern, nature-friendly ways of processing our waste.” Muller states that the current situation is not good for agriculture and livestock farming, the environment and human health. He announces that he will discuss this with OWRO and other involved authorities. A more targeted policy is being considered to reduce fire and smoke development at the landfill.
Muller advises local residents to keep windows and doors closed in case of smoke development. Anyone who has to go outside must wear a well-fitting face mask. People who experience breathing problems should consult a doctor or report to the Emergency Department (ED) as soon as possible. According to Muller, the National Environmental Authority (NMA) and the National Coordination Center for Disaster Management (NCCR) have also been involved since Monday evening. “We don't want to leave anything to chance,” said the mayor.

De burgervader zegt op dinsdag 11 augustus in gesprek met de Communicatie Dienst Suriname (CDS) dat, nadat hij de melding rond 14.30 tot 14.45 uur ontving, de brandweer en politie direct zijn ingeschakeld. De situatie ontwikkelde zich in de avonduren van een kleine brand tot een vlammenzee met veel rook. Volgens de dc brengt een dergelijke situatie risico’s met zich mee voor zowel mens als milieu. Op dinsdag 11 augustus was de brand volgens dc Muller onder controle. De brandweer bleef echter ter plekke, omdat niet kan worden uitgesloten dat het vuur, onderaan de ongeveer negen meter hoge afvalberg, nog smeult. De witte rook die nog zichtbaar is, wijst volgens de brandweer niet op open vuur. “Maar al met al neemt de brandweer geen kans, want je moet hem in ieder geval onder controle blijven houden”, aldus de burgervader. Over de oorzaak bestaat vooralsnog geen zekerheid. Mogelijk is er sprake van brandstichting. “Maar er zijn geen camera’s, dus dat kan niet bevestigd worden”, zegt de dc. De burgervader geeft aan dat Ornamibo vaker met branden te maken heeft gehad en dat de gevolgen daarvan ernstig zijn voor de omgeving. Dc Muller pleit daarom voor preventieve maatregelen. Hij heeft tegenover de brandweer en het ministerie van Openbare Werken en Ruimtelijke Ordening (OWRO) aangegeven dat onder meer waterslangen met sproeiers kunnen worden ingezet om delen van het terrein vochtig te houden. Op die manier kan worden voorkomen dat beginnende branden zich uitbreiden. De districtscommissaris zelf is geen voorstander meer van Ornamibo. “Ik denk dat we nu wel moeten gaan naar modernere, natuurvriendelijke manieren om onze afval te verwerken.” Muller stelt dat de huidige situatie niet goed is voor landbouw en veeteelt, het milieu en de gezondheid van de mens. Hij kondigt aan hierover met OWRO en andere betrokken instanties om de tafel te zullen gaan. Gedacht wordt aan gerichter beleid om brand en rookontwikkeling op de vuilstortplaats terug te dringen. Muller adviseert buurtbewoners om bij rookontwikkeling, ramen en deuren gesloten te houden. Wie toch naar buiten moet, dient een goed aansluitend mondkapje te dragen. Mensen die ademhalingsproblemen ervaren, moeten een arts raadplegen of zich zo snel mogelijk bij de Spoedeisende Hulp (SEH) melden. Volgens Muller zijn sinds maandagavond ook de Nationale Milieu Autoriteit (NMA) en het Nationaal Coördinatie Centrum voor Rampenbeheersing (NCCR) betrokken. “We willen niets aan het toeval overlaten”, aldus de burgervader. © 2026 GOV.SR |Privacy Policy|Cookie Policy
