Ministerio de Salud recibe más de 435,000 dosis de vacunas para fortalecer el esquema nacional de inmunización
Santo Domingo.-The Ministry of Health received 386,990 doses of the hexavalent acellular vaccine and 50,000 of the tetravalent acellular vaccine, which were incorporated into the Expanded Immunization Program (EPI) to continue guaranteeing the free and timely protection of Dominican children against six preventable diseases.
The hexavalent acellular vaccine protects with a single application against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae type b infections, the main cause of serious diseases such as meningitis in childhood.
This biological is used in the vaccination schedule in children from two months of age and requires four doses, which are administered at 2, 4 and 6 months, with a booster at 18 months, guaranteeing complete immunization during the first years of life.
While the quadrivalent vaccine protects against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and poliomyelitis by applying a booster dose at 4 years of age.
The director of Immunopreventables through Vaccines (DIV), Aida Lucía Vargas, highlighted that these vaccines are acquired through the Revolving Fund of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), a mechanism that ensures the acquisition of biologicals with the highest standards of quality, safety and effectiveness.
The doses are already distributed in the National Vaccination Network and are applied free of charge in the more than 1,350 vaccination posts enabled throughout the national territory.
The Ministry reiterated that vaccination constitutes one of the most effective public health strategies to prevent diseases and reduce infant mortality, which is why it maintains a permanent supply of biologicals to respond to national demand and guarantee the continuity of immunization schedules.
The institution indicated that it maintains an adequate reserve to guarantee the continuity of vaccination in the event of any eventuality that may affect international supply logistics, thus ensuring the availability of vaccines for the target population.
In that sense, he reported that in the coming weeks he will continue to receive new batches of vaccines to strengthen the national supply and maintain immunization coverage throughout the country.
