Senpa alcanza cifras récord en 2026 y fortalece la vigilancia ambiental en todo el país
Santo Domingo.– In just seven months of 2026, the National Environmental Protection Service (Senpa) has already surpassed the results achieved during the historic year 2025, which confirms the sustained growth of the institution and the strengthening of its capacity to protect natural heritage and enforce environmental legislation throughout the national territory.
Between January and July of this year, Senpa carried out 36,512 environmental surveillance operations, compared to the 23,534 carried out in the same period of 2025, which shows a significant increase in its presence in the national territory and a strengthening of its capacity to prevent, detect and confront environmental crimes. In that same period, the number of people detained increased from 3,136 to 7,685, while vehicles seized went from 1,433 to 2,332, figures that reflect a more effective response to violations that affect the country's natural resources.
As part of the surveillance actions carried out throughout the national territory, the Senpa also increased the detection of foreigners with irregular immigration status during environmental operations and handed over 5,213 people to the General Directorate of Immigration, compared to 1,292 registered in the same period of the previous year, in compliance with the legal powers of the Senpa.
This performance responds to the strengthening of the operational capabilities of the SENPA, supported by the Ministry of the Environment, through the improvement of its mobility, equipment and logistical support. This support, together with the leadership of the general director of the Senpa, Brigadier General Ángel Camacho Ubiera (ERD), and the commitment of the men and women who make up the institution, has allowed it to expand its presence in the territory and make environmental surveillance more effective for the benefit of the country's natural resources.
"The effective protection of natural heritage requires prepared institutions, with the capacity to act and enforce the law. The results that Senpa exhibits today demonstrate that strengthening its capabilities translates into a greater presence of the State in the territory, a more timely response to environmental crimes and better protection of our forests, rivers, protected areas and natural resources. We will continue to support this effort to continue strengthening the country's environmental management," said the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Paíno Henríquez.
The results achieved during these first seven months confirm this evolution. The increase in operations, control actions and institutional presence in the territory demonstrates that a better prepared institution responds more effectively to environmental crimes and strengthens the protection of natural heritage.
For his part, the director of Senpa, Brigadier General Ángel Camacho Ubiera, stated that these results are the result of the guidelines of the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, as well as the commitment of the personnel and the strengthening of the operational capabilities of the institution.
"These results are the result of the commitment, discipline and dedication of the men and women who make up Senpa, as well as the strengthening of our operational capabilities, which has allowed us to expand our presence in the territory and act more effectively against environmental crimes. We will continue working in a coordinated manner with the Ministry of the Environment and other State institutions to protect our natural heritage and guarantee compliance with environmental law," he stated.
Protected areas register a historic increase in surveillance actions
The protection of the National System of Protected Areas (Sinap) continues to be one of Senpa's main priorities. Between January and July 2026, the institution carried out 1,962 operations in these spaces, compared to the 1,293 carried out in the same period of 2025. As a result, people arrested for environmental violations increased from 513 to 3,716, while vehicles seized went from 46 to 264, which reflects a strengthening of surveillance and compliance with environmental legislation.
Senpa maintains a permanent presence in protected areas to prevent illegal occupations, logging, forest fires, illicit extraction of natural resources and other activities that threaten these ecosystems, thus strengthening the conservation of an essential part of the natural heritage of the Dominican Republic.
As a specialized agency dependent on the Ministry of Defense, which works in support of the Ministry of the Environment and the Specialized Attorney for the Defense of the Environment, Senpa plays an essential role in environmental surveillance, inspection and control.
The more than 36,000 operations carried out during the first seven months of 2026 reflect an institution that is increasingly prepared to protect the forests, rivers, protected areas and other natural resources of the Dominican Republic. This result strengthens the presence of the State in the territory and reaffirms the commitment to continue defending the natural heritage for the benefit of present and future generations.
