Participated this morning (10) in a meeting of the "A Nation United" (Ratama Ekata) National Steering Council, established to eradicate the dangerous drug menace, held at the Presidential Secretariat. The meeting discussed the need to enforce stringent laws to counter the criminal environment that has emerged around the vast wealth generated through drug trafficking, which now poses a serious threat to the national economy, the tourism industry and social values. The importance of building a society in which people are protected from the threats posed by drug trafficking and associated crime was also emphasized. It was revealed that the process of issuing forensic reports, which had contributed to delays in drug-related cases, has been significantly expedited. A total of 6,414 forensic reports were issued in July alone. The meeting also reviewed the progress of several key measures, including amendments to laws relating to drug control and the granting of bail; the submission to Parliament of the draft amendments to the Rehabilitation Act No. 54 of 2007; the recruitment of experienced retired officers on a contractual basis to address delays at the Legal Draftsman's Department and the "Mithuru Pasala" program jointly implemented by the Ministries of Education and Health to prevent the spread of drugs within the school system. The progress of institution-level programs implemented under the revised Multisectoral National Strategic Plan was also reviewed. The plan focuses on six key strategies: preventing drug use, early identification, rehabilitation, legal and institutional reforms, preventing relapse and follow-up, and planning, regulation, review and reporting. I emphasized the need to treat the dangerous drug challenge as a national crisis and to create practical mechanisms and an urgent shift in attitudes across society to eradicate it. I also highlighted the responsibility and role of all citizens, including religious leaders, parents and community organizations, in addressing this national challenge.
