Saudi Arabia, Qatar welcome UN Security Council condemnation of Houthi attacks
Riyadh/Doha, Aug. 9 (SANA)Saudi Arabia and Qatarwelcomed aUN Security Councilstatement condemning Houthi militia missile attacks on Saudi territory and commercial vessels, reaffirming support for regional security and freedom of navigation.
The statement, issued by Security Council members on Friday, condemned attacks carried out since July and expressed concern over escalatingtensions in Yemen, warning against actions that could undermine peace efforts and threaten international peace and security.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministrysaid the Kingdom welcomed the council members’ call for compliance with international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216, as well as respect for Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity.
The ministry reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s right to defend its territory, citizens, resources and facilities against attacks and said the Kingdom would take necessary measures to safeguard its security and sovereignty in accordance with international law.
Riyadhalso reiterated its support for Yemen’s legitimate government and for efforts by the UN secretary-general’s special envoy for Yemen to achieve peace, security and stability.
The Saudi ministry called on the international community to ensure implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions and take a firm stance against actions that threaten regional stability,maritime navigationand international trade or undermine efforts to achieve peace in Yemen.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministryseparately welcomed the Security Council statement and reiterated Doha’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and support for measures taken by the Kingdom to protect its sovereignty and security.
The ministry said Saudi Arabia’s security was an integral part of Qatar’s security and that of the Gulf Cooperation Council states.
