Syria to participate in Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games with 31 athletes
Damascus, Aug. 8 (SANA)Syriawill participate in the Mediterranean Games, scheduled to be held in the Italian city ofTarantofrom August 21 to September 3, with a delegation of 31 male and female athletes competing in eight sports: table tennis, weightlifting, karate, wrestling, judo, gymnastics, cycling, and archery.
The participation comes as part of efforts by theMinistry of Sports and Youthand theSyrian Olympic Committeeto strengthen Syria’s presence at major international sporting events and provide Syrian athletes with opportunities to gain competitive experience alongside athletes from Mediterranean countries.
TheTaranto 2026 Mediterranean Gameswill bring together athletes from 26 countries across Europe, Asia, and Africa, who will compete in 31 sports under applicable international rules and regulations. The Games are organized under the supervision of the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG).
The participation in Taranto will mark Syria’s 19th appearance in the Mediterranean Games. According to data from the Ministry of Sports and Youth, 1,131 Syrian athletes have participated in the Games throughout their history, out of a total of 47,728 athletes.
Syrian athletes have achieved notable results in previous editions, particularly in strength sports, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, winning 229 medals, including 57 gold, 66 silver, and 106 bronze.
