Vertrekkende Nederlandse ambassadeur blikt tevreden terug
President Jennifer Simons has received the Dutch ambassador to Suriname, Walter Oostelbos, for his farewell audience. At the meeting on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at the Office of the President, the diplomat looked back on a positive collaboration. The Dutch envoy hinted that the relationship with Suriname will be more businesslike. Ambassador Oostelbos ends his ambassadorship and returns to the Netherlands on August 14. The diplomat looks back on his period in Suriname with warm feelings.
"I have always felt welcome. You live in a beautiful country. Forget gold and wood, because the absolute wealth of Suriname is its people. And I will miss them the most." According to the ambassador, Suriname and the Netherlands have once again seen positive developments in their relationship since 2020. "The Netherlands and Suriname are family, and we cannot actually live without each other. In all families there are peaks and valleys, but the most important thing in a family is that you continue to hold each other close." Minister Melvin Bouva of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation speaks of “a dynamic relationship, in which we are now really looking at our interests”.
The minister emphasizes that Suriname and the Netherlands are working on “an equal relationship”. According to Ambassador Oostelbos, cooperation is increasingly based on equality, mutual respect and trust. The Netherlands has made 10 million euros available for the next five years. The resources are aimed at, among other things, strengthening the rule of law, increasing the government's earning capacity, strengthening infrastructure and water management and social and social development.
Visa policy was also discussed during the conversation with the president. Ambassador Oostelbos pointed out that this is an EU matter and called on Suriname to formally initiate the process towards visa-free travel in Brussels. At the same time, the Netherlands remains committed to keeping waiting times as short as possible. Minister Bouva called the visa issue “an important point for discussion”. According to him, traveling for Surinamese people should become easier, smoother and more humane.

Bij de ontmoeting op dinsdag 4 augustus 2026 op het Kabinet van de President, blikte de diplomaat terug op een positieve samenwerking. De Nederlandse gezant liet doorschemeren dat de relatie met Suriname zakelijker zal worden ingevuld. Ambassadeur Oostelbos beëindigt zijn ambassadeurschap en vertrekt op 14 augustus terug naar Nederland. De diplomaat blikt met warme gevoelens terug op zijn periode in Suriname. “Ik heb me altijd welkom gevoeld. Jullie wonen in een prachtig land. Vergeet goud en hout, want de absolute rijkdom van Suriname, dat zijn de mensen. En die ga ik het meest missen.” Volgens de ambassadeur hebben Suriname en Nederland sinds 2020 opnieuw een positieve ontwikkeling in hun relatie ingezet. “Nederland en Suriname zijn familie, en we kunnen eigenlijk niet zonder elkaar. In alle families heb je pieken en dalen, maar het allerbelangrijkste in een familie is dat je elkaar vast blijft houden.” Minister Melvin Bouva van Buitenlandse Zaken, Internationale Handel en Samenwerking spreekt van “een dynamische relatie, waarbij we nu echt kijken naar ons belang”. De bewindsman benadrukt dat Suriname en Nederland werken aan “een gelijkwaardige relatie”. De samenwerking wordt volgens ambassadeur Oostelbos steeds meer gebaseerd op gelijkwaardigheid, wederzijds respect en vertrouwen. Nederland heeft 10 miljoen euro beschikbaar gesteld voor de komende vijf jaar. De middelen zijn gericht op onder meer versterking van de rechtsstaat, vergroting van het verdienvermogen van de overheid, versterking van infrastructuur en waterbeheer en maatschappelijke en sociale ontwikkeling. Ook het visumbeleid kwam tijdens het gesprek met de president aan de orde. Ambassadeur Oostelbos wees erop dat dit een EU-aangelegenheid is en riep Suriname op om in Brussel formeel het traject naar visumvrij reizen in te zetten. Tegelijkertijd blijft Nederland zich inzetten om wachttijden zo kort mogelijk te houden. Minister Bouva noemde het visumvraagstuk “een belangrijk punt van bespreking”. Volgens hem moet het reizen voor Surinamers eenvoudiger, soepeler en menswaardiger worden.
