On Thursday, July 16, 2026, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Cooperation Melvin Bouva, the Regional Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), received Michelle Brathwaite and Reba Granado‑John,National Human Rights Officer, for a courtesy visit.
During the meeting, the minister expressed his appreciation for the technical support that the OHCHR provides to Suriname in the context of the preparation of the fourth cycle of reporting on the status of human rights, the so-called Fourth Universal Periodic Review (UPR). He emphasized that the UPR is an important UN mechanism that supports countries in strengthening the protection and promotion of human rights.
Minister Bouva confirmed Suriname's commitment to constructive cooperation with the United Nations and underlined the importance of capacity building within the government. In this context, the two-day UPR workshop organized by the OHCHR was welcomed, as part of the preparations for the submission of our national report.
Furthermore, further cooperation between Suriname and the OHCHR was discussed, including the strengthening of national implementation mechanisms, the improvement of reporting capacity for UN human rights treaties, the establishment of an independent national human rights institution in accordance with the Paris Principles and the promotion of human rights education.
The minister emphasized that Suriname remains committed to open dialogue and sustainable cooperation with the United Nations to further strengthen the human rights situation in the country.

Tijdens het onderhoud sprak de minister zijn waardering uit voor de technische ondersteuning die het OHCHR verleent aan Suriname in het kader van de voorbereiding van de vierde cyclus van de rapportage van de status van mensenrechten, de zogehetenVierde Universal Periodic Review (UPR). Hij benadrukte dat de UPR een belangrijk VN-mechanisme is dat landen ondersteunt bij het versterken van de bescherming en bevordering van de mensenrechten. Minister Bouva bevestigde de inzet van Suriname voor een constructieve samenwerking met de Verenigde Naties en onderstreepte het belang vancapaciteitsversterkingbinnen de overheid. In dat verband werd de door het OHCHR georganiseerde tweedaagse UPR-workshop verwelkomd, in het kader van de voorbereidingen ter indiening van ons national rapport. Voorts werd gesproken over de verdere samenwerking tussen Suriname en het OHCHR, waaronder de versterking van nationale implementatiemechanismen, de verbetering van de rapportagecapaciteit voor VN-mensenrechtenverdragen, de instelling van een onafhankelijke nationale mensenrechteninstelling overeenkomstig de Paris Principes en de bevordering van mensenrechteneducatie.
