The Minister of Land Policy and Forestry (GBB), Mr. Stanley Legijo Soeropawiro, represented Suriname during the Regional High-Level Dialogue for Effective Governance and Management of Caribbean Wetlands, held from 7 to 9 July 2026 in Negril, Jamaica. The meeting was the official closing event of the regional IKI project Wise Use of Caribbean Wetlands for Climate Change Mitigation and Conservation of their Ecosystem Services and brought together ministers, policy makers, Ramsar focal points and international organizations from the Caribbean to evaluate the project's results and make joint agreements on the future of sustainable wetlands management.
During the ministerial panel, Minister Soeropawiro presented Suriname's vision on the sustainable management of wetlands and the crucial role that these ecosystems play in biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, water management and the livelihood of local communities. The minister also highlighted the progress Suriname has made in the field of protected area management, including the implementation of METT assessments, the updating of management plans for the Multiple Use Management Areas (MUMAs) and the further development of co-management with local communities. These initiatives contribute to a more effective implementation of the Ramsar Convention and strengthen the protection of Surinamese wetlands.
Bilateral meetings strengthen international cooperation
In addition to the plenary sessions, the minister held a series of bilateral discussions with international partners and fellow ministers. An important consultation took place with Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, and the newly appointed regional representative of the Ramsar Secretariat. During this meeting the further intensification of cooperation between Suriname and the Ramsar Secretariat, the implementation of the Ramsar Convention and the support of future national and regional initiatives in the field of wetlands management were discussed.
In addition, the minister had constructive discussions with the ministers and high representatives of Belize, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. During these meetings, experiences were exchanged on nature management, climate adaptation, sustainable use of wetlands and biodiversity conservation. Opportunities for further regional cooperation and knowledge exchange within the Caribbean were also discussed.
Appreciation for international partners
As a token of appreciation for the excellent cooperation, Minister Soeropawiro, on behalf of the Republic of Suriname, presented traditional Surinamese business gifts to the Secretary General of the Ramsar Convention, representatives of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Minister of Jamaica and various other international partners and colleagues. With this gesture, Suriname underlined the importance of sustainable international partnerships in the protection of wetlands and biodiversity.
Suriname's participation in this regional dialogue confirms the active role of the Ministry of Land Policy and Forest Management within international nature and climate processes. The meeting not only provided an opportunity to share Surinamese experiences, but also to enter into new partnerships that will contribute to the further strengthening of the national policy for wetlands, nature management and climate resilience.
The significance of the Surinamese contribution was also underlined after the conference by an official letter of thanks from IUCN to Minister Soeropawiro. In this letter, IUCN expressed its appreciation for Suriname's active participation in the High-Level Dialogue and emphasized that Suriname's contribution has provided a valuable boost to regional cooperation for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands in the Caribbean. IUCN also expressed its wish to further deepen cooperation with Suriname and invited the government of Suriname to consider joining as a member state of IUCN.

Tijdens het ministerieel panel presenteerde minister Soeropawiro de visie van Suriname op het duurzaam beheer van wetlands en de cruciale rol die deze ecosystemen vervullen bij biodiversiteitsbehoud, klimaatadaptatie, waterbeheer en de bestaanszekerheid van lokale gemeenschappen. De minister belichtte tevens de voortgang die Suriname heeft geboekt op het gebied van beschermd gebiedenbeheer, waaronder de uitvoering van METT-assessments, de actualisering van beheerplannen voor de Multiple Use Management Areas (MUMA’s) en de verdere ontwikkeling van co-management met lokale gemeenschappen. Deze initiatieven dragen bij aan een effectievere implementatie van de Ramsar-Conventie en versterken de bescherming van de Surinaamse wetlands. Bilaterale ontmoetingen versterken internationale samenwerking Naast de plenaire sessies voerde de minister een reeks bilaterale gesprekken met internationale partners en collega-ministers. Een belangrijk overleg vond plaats metdr. Musonda Mumba, Secretaris-Generaal van de Ramsar-Conventie, en de nieuw aangetreden regionale vertegenwoordiger van het Ramsar Secretariaat. Tijdens deze ontmoeting werd gesproken over de verdere intensivering van de samenwerking tussen Suriname en het Ramsar Secretariaat, de uitvoering van de Ramsar-Conventie en de ondersteuning van toekomstige nationale en regionale initiatieven op het gebied van wetlandsbeheer. Daarnaast had de minister constructieve gesprekken met de ministers en hoge vertegenwoordigers vanBelize, Trinidad en Tobago, Jamaica, Cuba en de Dominicaanse Republiek. Tijdens deze ontmoetingen werden ervaringen uitgewisseld over natuurbeheer, klimaatadaptatie, duurzaam gebruik van wetlands en biodiversiteitsbehoud. Tevens werden mogelijkheden besproken voor verdere regionale samenwerking en kennisuitwisseling binnen het Caribisch gebied. Waardering voor internationale partners Als blijk van waardering voor de uitstekende samenwerking overhandigde minister Soeropawiro namens de Republiek Suriname traditionele Surinaamse relatiegeschenken aan de Secretaris-Generaal van de Ramsar-Conventie, vertegenwoordigers van de International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), de minister van Jamaica en diverse overige internationale partners en collega’s. Met dit gebaar onderstreepte Suriname het belang van duurzame internationale partnerschappen bij de bescherming van wetlands en biodiversiteit. De deelname van Suriname aan deze regionale dialoog bevestigt de actieve rol van het ministerie van Grondbeleid en Bosbeheer binnen internationale natuur- en klimaatprocessen. De bijeenkomst bood niet alleen gelegenheid om de Surinaamse ervaringen te delen, maar ook om nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden aan te gaan die zullen bijdragen aan de verdere versterking van het nationale beleid voor wetlands, natuurbeheer en klimaatbestendigheid. De betekenis van de Surinaamse bijdrage werd na afloop van de conferentie bovendien onderstreept door een officiële dankbrief van IUCN aan minister Soeropawiro. Hierin sprak IUCN haar waardering uit voor de actieve deelname van Suriname aan de High-Level Dialogue en benadrukte zij dat de bijdrage van Suriname een waardevolle impuls heeft gegeven aan de regionale samenwerking voor het behoud en het duurzaam gebruik van wetlands in het Caribisch gebied.
