The protection of the environment and the land rights of indigenous and tribal peoples is a high priority of the government. President Jennifer Simons emphasized during the government press conference on Monday, August 3, 2026, that these issues are high on the agenda. Immediately after the current cabinet took office, the government entered into discussions with indigenous people and tribals regarding the land rights issue. “And after many discussions, we have probably reached the point where we can now protect their habitats against the overnight granting of rights in their areas or in the vicinity of their areas,” the head of state emphasized.
According to the president, a state decree is also being prepared, which will not only protect residential areas and habitats, but also create special protected forests. The head of state referred to the pollution of the Saramacca River, which led to a massive fish kill. This disrupted the normal life of the local residents. Partly due to this situation, people cannot use the river water or fish for the time being. Food parcels and drinking water have now been distributed from the Office of the President to the affected communities through the People's Contact Office.
The National Environmental Authority (NMA) has now provided some information. “So within the next two weeks more will be known about that and how we deal with it,” the head of state said. The information obtained would also clarify whether those responsible for this environmental disaster are legally or illegally engaged in mining activities in the area. According to President Simons, this is an acute matter that must be resolved. “But we must also look at how this can be fundamentally tackled.”
Mennonite issue The activities of Mennonites in the interior are also closely monitored. According to the head of state, during the previous government, "a few hundred thousand hectares" were issued from the Ministry of Land Policy and Forestry (GBB) to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (LVV) to be converted into agricultural land. However, these lands are located in the tropical rainforest. “We have asked the minister (current GBB minister Stanley Soeropawiro) to put that back and only what is in the coastal plain could remain with LVV. Because we indeed want to stimulate the agricultural sector,” the president emphasized.
In the meantime, a working group has been set up with the task of collecting the necessary information. The information obtained has shown that the Mennonites are illegal. “This means that we will take measures against this. And we are still working with the authorities to find out in which areas there have been violations and what the final approach will be,” said the head of state.
According to President Simons, the aforementioned group has already received a notice via a bailiff that they must leave the area in question. This action should serve as an example for other groups that would like to move to Suriname to engage in large-scale agriculture. According to the head of state, there is sufficient land available in the coastal plain. “If they want to isolate themselves in the interior, that will not work. We will not allow it,” the president said.

President Jennifer Simons heeft tijdens de regeringspersconferentie op maandag 3 augustus 2026 benadrukt dat deze kwesties hoog op de agenda staan. Meteen na het aantreden van het huidige kabinet ging de regering in gesprek met de inheemsen en tribalen aangaande het grondenrechtenvraagstuk. “En na veel gesprekken zijn we waarschijnlijk zo ver dat we nu wel hun woon- en leefgebieden kunnen beschermen tegen het overnight geven van rechten in hun gebieden of in de omgeving van hun gebieden”, benadrukte het staatshoofd. Er is volgens de president ook een staatsbesluit in voorbereiding, dat niet alleen de woon- en leefgebieden zal beschermen, maar ook bijzondere beschermde bossen zal creëren. Het staatshoofd verwees naar de vervuiling van de Saramaccarivier, die leidde tot een massale vissterfte. Het normale leven van de locale bewoners raakte hierdoor verstoord. De mensen kunnen mede door deze situatie voorlopig geen gebruikmaken van het rivierwater noch aan visvangst doen. Vanuit het Kabinet van de President zijn via het Bureau Volkscontacten inmiddels voedselpakketten en drinkwater aan de getroffen gemeenschappen uitgedeeld. De Nationale Milieuautoriteit (NMA) heeft inmiddels enige informatie verschaft. “Dus binnen de komende twee weken zal er meer daarover bekend zijn en hoe wij daarmee omgaan”, zei het staatshoofd. Er zou uit de verkregen informatie ook duidelijk worden of degenen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor deze milieuramp legaal of illegaal bezig zijn met mijnbouwactiviteiten in het gebied. Volgens president Simons zou het een acute zaak betreffen, die moet worden opgelost. “Maar we moeten vooral ook kijken naar hoe dat fundamenteel kan worden aangepakt.” Kwestie mennonietenOok de activiteiten van mennonieten in het binnenland worden nauw in de gaten gehouden. Volgens het staatshoofd zijn tijdens de vorige regering vanuit het ministerie van Grondbeleid en Bosbeheer (GBB) “een paar honderdduizend hectaren” aan het ministerie van Landbouw, Veeteelt en Visserij (LVV) uitgegeven om in landbouwgrond te worden omgezet. Deze gronden bevinden zich echter in het tropisch regenwoud. “We hebben gevraagd aan de minister (huidige GBB-minister Stanley Soeropawiro) om dat terug te zetten en alleen datgene wat in de kustvlakte is, zou bij LVV kunnen blijven. Omdat wij ook inderdaad de agrosector willen stimuleren”, benadrukte de president. Intussen is er een werkgroep samengesteld met als opdracht de nodige informatie te verzamelen. Uit de verkregen informatie is gebleken dat de mennonieten illegaal zijn. “Dat betekent dat wij daar maatregelen tegen gaan treffen. En we zijn nog bezig met de autoriteiten om uit te zoeken op welke gebieden er allemaal overtredingen zijn geweest en hoe de finale aanpak zal zijn”, aldus het staatshoofd. Volgens president Simons heeft voornoemde groep reeds via een deurwaardersexploot bericht ontvangen dat zij uit desbetreffend gebied weg moeten. Deze actie zou als voorbeeld moeten dienen voor overige groepen, die naar Suriname zouden willen trekken om aan grootschalige landbouw te doen. Volgens het staatshoofd is er in de kustvlakte voldoende grond beschikbaar. “Als ze zich willen afzonderen in het binnenland, gaat dat niet lukken.
