Gobierno y sector productivo coordinan acciones para anticipar los efectos del fenómeno El Niño
The meeting was attended by the Vice Minister of Livestock, Marcelo González, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), as well as leaders of the Union of Production Guilds (UGP), the Rural Association of Paraguay (ARP), the Paraguayan Chamber of Exporters and Marketers of Cereals and Oilseeds (Capeco), the Federation of Production Cooperatives (Fecoprod) and the Association of Seed Producers of Paraguay (Aprosemp).
Planning to reduce risks and take advantage of opportunities
The main topic addressed was the evaluation of the possible impacts of the El Niño phenomenon on the productive sector, analyzing both the opportunities that the rains could generate for certain crops and the risks associated with flooding and the isolation of communities, with effects on agricultural and livestock production.
The Vice Minister of Livestock, Marcelo González, highlighted that the meeting allowed for maintaining an open dialogue between the Government and the productive unions to incorporate their proposals into the work agenda of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, giving continuity to this coordination space through a new meeting scheduled for the first days of September.
Coordination between the State and the productive sector
The president of the Union of Production Guilds (UGP), Héctor Cristaldo, valued the reactivation of the Agrarian Advisory Council as an institutional space to strengthen joint work between the public and private sectors. He noted that the challenge is to anticipate problems through planning and prevention, before climate effects generate greater impacts.
Along the same lines, the president of the Rural Association of Paraguay (ARP), Daniel Prieto Davey, expressed the willingness of the livestock sector to work in coordination with the Government, the Armed Forces and the National Emergency Secretariat, with the purpose of reducing the consequences that intense rains could generate, especially in communities and productive establishments located in vulnerable areas.
Preparation for a new agricultural campaign
For his part, the president of the Association of Seed Producers of Paraguay (Aprosemp), Fabián Pereira, highlighted that the meeting made it possible to analyze both the challenges and opportunities that the climate phenomenon could represent for agriculture, reaffirming the need to strengthen the sector through public policies and coordinated work between the State and producers.
