The vote will be held during the organization’s General Assembly, which will bring together representatives of nearly 200 national chess federations worldwide.

The election will be one of the key events of the upcoming FIDE Congress and will be held alongside the 46th Chess Olympiad, taking place in Samarkand from September 15 to 27. The ancient city is expected to become the world chess capital for two weeks, drawing thousands of chess players, officials, and representatives of national federations.

To date, three candidates have registered to participate in the election. Timur Turlov, President of the Kazakhstan Chess Federation, will run for the presidency with Viswanathan Anand as his Vice Presidential candidate, German entrepreneur Jan Henric Buettner with British chess official Malcolm Pein, and Wadim Rosenstein, founder of Germany’s WR Chess, with Singaporean entrepreneur Gordon Tang.

Under the FIDE Statutes, the President is elected by the General Assembly, which comprises national chess federations. Each federation has one vote, regardless of a country’s population or level of chess development. Voting is conducted by secret ballot, and the candidate who receives a majority of the votes is elected.
