Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, today announced the publication of the first Action Plan under the National Strategy for Women and Girls 2025–2030.

The National Strategy for Women and Girls is a whole-of-Government plan which aims to level the playing field for women and girls of all ages and backgrounds by eliminating all forms of discrimination against them.

The Action Plan, which remains a living document, for 2026–2028 outlines how the commitments in the strategy will be delivered. It identifies the Departments and agencies responsible for implementation and establishes mechanisms to track progress over the coming years.

Some of the commitments in the first Action Plan under the National Strategy for Women and Girls 2025–2030 include:

· Further support initiatives to increase the number of women in local politics, including rolling out Regional Women’s Caucus Networks across all local authorities and launching a new political participation campaign (Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage)

· Introduce a Parents Leave Pay Related Benefit (Department of Social Protection and Department of Children, Disability and Equality)

· A review of the circular on school uniforms to consider the affordability, comfort and sustainability of school uniforms. (Department of Education)

· New training for early years educators and school-­age childcare practitioners on equality of opportunity for girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)-­ related activities. (Department of Children, Disability and Equality)

· Develop effective, impactful and evidence led public awareness campaigns aimed at changing attitudes, preventing and reducing the incidence of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. (Cuan)

Alongside the publication of the Action Plan, Minister Foley has announced a new €1 million funding call aimed at supporting women to overcome barriers to employment. The initiative will help organisations develop projects that support women’s participation in the workforce, strengthen skills development and contribute to a more inclusive and resilient economy.

Further details of the funding call, including application arrangements, will be announced in the coming weeks.

While significant progress has been made, many women and girls continue to face barriers that affect their opportunities, wellbeing and full participation in society.

I am also pleased to announce a new €1m funding call that will support organisations in helping women overcome barriers to employment, return to the workforce and access new opportunities.

Together, these actions reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equal Ireland and ensuring that every woman and girl has the opportunity to thrive.”

The publication of the Action Plan represents an important milestone in Ireland’s efforts to achieve greater equality between women and men and supports the State’s commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
