UNICEF calls for an end to attacks on children in Russia and Ukraine

New York, 5 August (SANA)The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) renewed its call Tuesday for the protection of children inRussia and Ukraine, urging compliance with international humanitarian law and an end to attacks that result in the killing and injury of children.According to the UN News website, UNICEF said in a statement issued Tuesday that reports indicated a girl was killed and two other girls were injured in a drone attack targeting an area near a children’s playground in Russia’s Belgorod region.The organization added that three children were among seven people killed in an attack in Russia’s Krasnodar region, which also left around 40 people injured.UNICEF said that in Ukraine, at least six children were killed during the past seven days, including an eight-year-old child.The organization reported that three children were killed alongside members of their families in Ukraine’sDnipropetrovsk region, while two girls were killed in the Sumy region. At least 19 children were also injured during the same period.UNICEF stressed that children must be safe in the places where they live and play, calling on all parties to comply with international law, including obligations to protect children and civilian infrastructure.The Russia-Ukraine conflict has seen an expansion in reciprocal attacks, resulting in casualties and damage to infrastructure on both sides.
