Damascus, Aug. 4 (SANA)The Ministry of Energy, in cooperation with theUNDevelopment Programme (UNDP), on Tuesday organized a workshop on the state of Syria’s electricity sector and requirements for its development and improvement of services provided to citizens.

The workshop included a presentation on the state of theelectricity sectorand priority needs, a review ofUNDPinterventions, ongoing projects and future action plans, and discussions on expanding cooperation with theMinistry of Energyand the Syrian Electricity Company, according to the ministry statement on Telegram.

Electricity a cornerstone of economic recovery

The workshop featured a panel discussion with Deputy Minister for Water and Electricity Affairs Eng. Osama Abu Zeid,Syrian Electricity CompanyCEO Eng. Omar Shqrouq, economic expert Ziad Arabsh, and experts from theWorld Bankand several international donors, with additional participation via video conference.

The workshop was also attended by UNDP Deputy Representative Hala Rizk, UNDP Environment and Energy Team Leader Abeer Ashi, and Partnerships Adviser Ritu Sidharth.

Deputy Minister Abu Zeid said the electricity sector is a cornerstone ofeconomic recoveryand reconstruction, noting that work is underway on an integrated vision to rehabilitate electricity infrastructure, improve generation, transmission and distribution efficiency, and increase reliance onrenewable energysources to provide more stable and sustainable electricity services to citizens.

Strengthening partnerships with international organizations

He also said the scale of challenges facing the sector requires unified efforts and strengthened partnerships with international organizations and financial institutions.

Abu Zeid stressed that the ministry places high importance on coordination with international partners to direct support toward priority projects and achieve the best development impact.

The workshop concluded with an open discussion on enhancing coordination mechanisms, and recommendations to support the ministry’s efforts in developing the electricity sector and improving service quality in line with recovery andsustainable developmentpriorities.

The electricity sector in Syria has faced significant challenges, with years of war and neglect severely impacting generation capacity, transmission networks and distribution infrastructure.
