Young Syrian author publishes bilingual children’s book in Arabic and German
Damascus, Aug. 4 (SANA)Seven-year-old Syrian childKarma Shuwaikh, fromDeir Ezzor, has published her first children’s book, Mama’s Big Secret, in Arabic and in a bilingual Arabic-German edition through Dar Al-Karma Publishing House in Germany, highlighting the creativity of Syrian children and supporting initiatives that promote Arabic language and cultural identity.In a statement to SANA, Lamia Suleiman, Executive Director of Dar Al-Karma Publishing House, said Karma wrote the story about the anticipation of a new baby and completed both the writing and German translation herself. She added that the project reflects the ability of Syrian children abroad to create in Modern Standard Arabic while mastering the language of their host societies, strengthening their connection to their mother tongue.Suleiman stated that editorial work was limited to linguistic and spelling corrections while preserving the young author’s original voice. She added experts reviewed the book in both Arabic and German, artist Hala Tarek produced the illustrations, and she supervised the artistic design.She noted that the publication marks the beginning of a broader bilingual publishing initiative that includes workshops to discover young talents and projects to establish children’s libraries in Syrian cities.Founded in Hanover, Germany, in 2021, Dar Al-Karma Publishing House has distributed more than 25,000 books by the end of 2025 through an initiative that provides one free book in Syria for every book sold. The publishing house continues to expand its cultural projects, including the establishment of a children’s library in Deir Ezzor in cooperation with the Directorate of Culture, supporting reading, cultural development, and national development objectives.kA/M.F
