The President of the Republic of Seychelles,Dr Patrick Herminie, this morning received the Letters of Credence from the first-ever High Commissioner of the Republic of Malta to the Republic of Seychelles,His Excellency Dr Omar Seguna, during an official ceremony held at State House.

President Herminie warmly welcomed His Excellency Dr Seguna and congratulated him on his appointment as Malta's inaugural High Commissioner to Seychelles. The presentation of credentials marks a significant milestone in the diplomatic relations between the two island nations and reflects their shared commitment to expanding practical cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.

During their meeting, President Herminie and High Commissioner Seguna held wide-ranging discussions on areas of mutual interest, reaffirming the strong partnership between Seychelles and Malta as fellow Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Both leaders acknowledged the shared opportunities and challenges that come with being island nations, particularly in advancing sustainable development, climate resilience, and the shared priorities of Small Island Developing States.

Education and healthcare featured prominently in the discussions. President Herminie highlighted the opportunity to strengthen collaboration with Malta's well-established higher education institutions, enabling more Seychellois students to pursue tertiary education and specialised training, particularly in the medical and health sciences.

Mental health was also identified as a priority area for future cooperation. President Herminie outlined the recent establishment of Seychelles' Mental Health Agency, which has been tasked with addressing the country's growing mental health challenges and developing long-term strategies to improve mental health services. In this regard, Malta's recognised expertise and experience in the sector were identified as valuable assets that could support Seychelles in strengthening its mental health framework and enhancing the delivery of care.

The leaders also discussed digital transformation, with President Herminie reaffirming the Government of Seychelles' ambition to become a fully digitalised e-government by 2030. Recognising Malta's significant progress in digital governance and public service transformation, both parties explored opportunities for knowledge-sharing and technical cooperation that would assist Seychelles in achieving its digital transformation objectives.

Tourism, culture and sports also formed part of the discussions. The two leaders recognised the importance of expanding cooperation in these sectors through the exchange of expertise, cultural initiatives and sporting programmes. Such exchanges would not only strengthen people-to-people ties but also contribute to the continued development of sports and cultural collaboration in both countries.

His Excellency Dr Omar Seguna thanked President Herminie for the warm welcome extended to him upon his arrival in Seychelles and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to present his Letters of Credence. He reaffirmed Malta's commitment to further strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries and to expanding bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both nations.
