Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran, met with representatives of Kildare County Council, Dublin City Council, South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council on July 30th to discuss progress to date on the implementation of the Liffey Valley Park Strategy which was adopted by the four local authorities some years ago.
The Strategy sets out a vision for a 'necklace' of amenities along (mainly) public lands by the River Liffey, to provide recreational opportunities for the public, to conserve the biodiversity and amenity value of the river corridor, contribute to healthy active lifestyles, and support the heritage, economic and tourism potential of the Liffey Valley for local communities and tourist visitors alike.
At the meeting, on July 30th, representatives from the four local authorities set out the substantial progress made in each of their administrative areas since the Strategy was published in 2006 and discussed how this progress can be built on into the future.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Moran commented: “I was very pleased to reconvene this important conversation about the Liffey Valley amenity. The Office of Public Works strongly supports the objectives of the 2006 Strategy and believes that they continue to be relevant today. Substantial progress on the Strategy objectives has been achieved, including by the OPW, with the recent acquisition of lands at Castletown and Donaghcumper and the forthcoming construction of a new commemorative bridge at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens being just two examples.
I look forward to continued collaboration with Kildare County Council, Dublin City Council, South Dublin County Council and Fingal County Council as they deliver further on the Strategy within their areas, working together to deliver these important benefits into the future.“
A further meeting with local authorities is planned in early 2027.
